What are the key Care Austria plan details?

Care Austria insures people without Austrian citizenship whose permanent residence before the trip was outside Austria (with the exclusions in AVB § 1), on an unlimited term or a 364-day term with an extra MA 35 declaration; the policy terms (AVB) and Care Concept AG’s tariff page also set out who sells it and carries the risk, the start rules and the status on Vienna’s insurer list. Whether you need private cover at all depends on your permit and your job, which health insurance for an Austrian residence permit explains.

  • It insures people without Austrian citizenship whose permanent residence before the trip was outside Austria. The groups AVB § 1 excludes include people subject to compulsory Austrian health insurance.
  • Care Concept AG sells it online and sends the additional declaration for the authorities along with the policy (Care Concept). Care Concept insurance explained has more on the company.
  • The insurer is HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG).
  • The term is unlimited (ordinary cancellation only after 1 year, then only to 31 December with 1 month’s notice, AVB § 3) or up to 364 days (364-day tariffs need an extra MA 35 declaration), and you have a 14-day withdrawal right.
  • Cover never starts before you enter Austria or before you pay the first premium (AVB § 6). The 31-day general waiting period is waived if you buy before travelling (AVB § 7).
  • Care Concept AG is on Vienna’s MA 35 insurer list. Care Austria and Care Austria Education (the unlimited tariffs) need no extra declaration there, while the 364 tariffs need one (wien.gv.at, checked 30 October 2026). MA 35 Vienna for residence permits explains what that list means.

How much does each Care Austria tariff cost in 2026?

Care Austria unlimited tariffs cost €56 to €510 a month in 2026 (Care Concept tariff page, 2026), each with a 1-year minimum term (AVB § 3), and the unlimited Standard prices rise from 1 January 2028 (AVB § 5); the 364-day tariffs cost €51 to €219 and need an extra MA 35 declaration. Care Austria Education unlimited costs €56 a month for ages 12–35 (Care Concept tariff page, 2026), with a 1-year minimum term (AVB § 3).

Which Care Austria age band applies to me?

The Care Austria age band is set by the calendar year minus your year of birth, and the higher band starts on 1 January of the year you turn 50 or 65 (policy terms, premium table). Care Austria Education is for ages 12–35 whose main purpose is education or a working holiday; at age 36 cover continues under Standard (AVB § 1), so turning 36 does not end your insurance. The policy terms also count interns, volunteers, trainees and au pairs in that group (AVB Teil B II). Students comparing other routes can start with student health insurance in Austria.

Worked example. Someone born in 1976 counts as 50 in 2026 (2026 − 1976) and pays the 50–64 Standard price of €222 a month unlimited from 1 January 2026, with a 1-year minimum term (AVB § 3); from 1 January 2028 that price rises to €268 (AVB § 5). Retirees and parents in the higher bands will find more in retiring in Austria.

When do Care Austria Standard premiums rise?

Care Austria Standard unlimited premiums rise on 1 January 2028 under the policy terms (AVB § 5), and then every fourth insurance year. Care Austria Standard unlimited for ages 0–49 (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3) costs €155 a month in 2026 and €187 from 1 January 2028 (AVB § 5). When a step takes effect you have a special right to cancel within one month of the notice (AVB § 5 Ziff. 4).

What waiting periods and start rules apply to Care Austria?

The general Care Austria waiting period is 31 days, waived if you buy before travelling (AVB § 7, checked 30 October 2026). The special waiting period for childbirth and dental prosthetics is 8 months (AVB § 7). Cover cannot start before you enter Austria or before the first premium is paid (AVB § 6).

General waiting period31 days; waived if bought before travelling, if entry was no more than 31 days before the application, or when it follows comparable earlier cover without a gapAVB § 7
Special waiting period8 months for childbirth and dental prostheticsAVB § 7
DeductibleNone for normal treatment; illnesses, accident after-effects and infirmities existing at application follow §§ 9 and 15 — ask before you applyAVB §§ 7, 9, 15
Home-country tripsUp to 28 days per insurance year (14 days if the first year is under 4 months); each trip reported in writing before departure, otherwise 50 % of the maximum costsAVB § 6
CancellingWithdrawal within 14 days; unlimited tariffs: ordinary cancellation first after 1 year, then only to 31 December with 1 month’s noticeWithdrawal notice; AVB § 3
End of coverWhen an unlimited residence permit is granted or the stay in Austria endsAVB § 6

Because the insurance year is the calendar year, a contract that starts on 1 October 2026 can end at the earliest on 31 December 2027 (AVB § 3).

Cover also ends when an unlimited permit is granted, and for the Daueraufenthalt EU application itself the City of Vienna says you must take out another insurance, and we found no statement there of which kind it accepts (wien.gv.at). Ask MA 35 and plan the next insurance before you apply for permanent residence in Austria. Care Austria vs FeelSafe sets these rules next to another permit insurer.

Frequently asked questions

How is my age worked out for the Care Austria price?

Care Austria counts your age as the current calendar year minus your year of birth (policy terms, premium table); your first price uses the year in which your cover starts, and the age is counted again each calendar year. The higher price band starts on 1 January of the year in which you turn 50 or 65, not on your birthday. Someone born in 1976 therefore counts as 50 in 2026 and pays the 50–64 Standard price of €222 a month unlimited (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3), a 2026 price that rises to €268 from 1 January 2028 (AVB § 5).

Does Care Austria cover childbirth and dental prosthetics straight away?

Not straight away under the waiting-period rule: the policy terms set a special waiting period of 8 months for childbirth and dental prosthetics (AVB § 7). For a stay in Austria, the § 15 general declaration waives waiting periods that do not fit ÖGK-level cover; Care Concept has not confirmed to us how that applies here, so ask in writing before you apply. For other treatment the general waiting period is 31 days, waived if you take out the insurance before you travel, if you entered Austria no more than 31 days before you applied, or if the insurance follows comparable earlier cover without a gap.

Does Care Austria cover trips to my home country?

Care Austria covers stays in your home country for up to 28 days in total per insurance year (14 days if the first insurance year, which ends on 31 December, is shorter than 4 months), but only if you report each trip in writing before you leave; otherwise only 50 % of the maximum reimbursable costs are paid (AVB § 6).

Does Care Austria have a deductible?

Care Austria has no deductible for normal treatment: the policy terms say no own share applies to reimbursable costs (AVB § 7). Illnesses, accident after-effects and infirmities that already exist when you apply follow separate rules (§ 9, softened in Austria by the § 15 general declaration), so ask before you apply; the full explanation is on Care Austria plans and prices.

How do I pay the Care Austria premium?

The Care Austria premium is paid monthly, by SEPA direct debit from a bank or credit-card account or by bank transfer (policy terms). The consumer information lists extra fees only for some online payment methods, dunning, returned direct debits and refunds, plus a business fee if the insurer withdraws from the contract because the first premium is not paid; the amounts are on Care Austria plans and prices.

Is Care Concept’s English plan-details page legally binding?

No, Care Concept’s English plan-details page is not legally binding. It is a convenience translation: its own text says the legally binding version is the German one, and the policy terms state that the contract language is German (AVB § 16). Read the German policy terms (AVB PDF) before you sign.
