Austria student visa from Sri Lanka: steps, funds and health insurance (2026)

Quick answer

For an Austria student visa from Sri Lanka in 2026, the Austrian Embassy New Delhi is responsible; we found no Austrian embassy in Colombo. A degree needs the Residence Permit – Student, as a rule filed in person in New Delhi, with €218 and 12 months of funds, which is €8,670.96 under 24 (OeAD, 2026). Courses up to six months use a visa lodged at the centre in Sri Lanka. Travel insurance alone is not enough for the permit.

As of 30 October 2026: the Austrian Embassy New Delhi is responsible for Sri Lanka; the Residence Permit – Student is, as a rule (§ 21 NAG), filed there in person (€218, paid in Indian rupees); students under 24 show €722.58 a month for 12 months, from 24 €1,308.39 (OeAD; base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG); visas up to 6 months are lodged at the application centre in Sri Lanka under the embassy’s August 2026 Sri Lanka checklist. The sources are bmeia.gv.at and oead.at.
Students 12–35, unlimited: €56/month (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3)Students 12–35, 364-day tariff, extra MA 35 declaration: €51/month

These Care Austria Education prices (2026) are for the residence permit. They do not replace the travel insurance for a visa C or D, because cover cannot start before entry into Austria. On the unlimited tariff, ordinary cancellation is possible only after 1 year, then only to 31 December with 1 month’s notice (AVB § 3). If you pick the 364-day tariff, Vienna’s MA 35 needs an extra declaration.

Which Austrian student visa do you need from Sri Lanka?

Courses of up to six months use a visa lodged at the application centre in Sri Lanka, while a full degree needs a residence permit filed, as a rule, in person at Austria’s embassy for Sri Lanka in New Delhi (§ 21 NAG). The embassy’s Sri Lanka checklist says: “If applicant intends to stay longer than 6 (six) months, Residence Permit (“Aufenthaltstitel”) has to be applied for”, and a visa C or D “cannot be extended or renewed in Austria” (checklist PDF). OeAD draws the same line (OeAD: visa C or D).

Summer school or course up to 90 days

Visa C, lodged at the application centre in Sri Lanka; travel insurance of at least €30,000; fee €90 for adults, waived for students on a study stay (EU Visa Code, per bmeia.gv.at).

Start with the Sri Lanka checklist.

Semester or course of 91 days to 6 months

Visa D, also lodged in Sri Lanka for the embassy in New Delhi; fee €195 from age 6 (2026).

Then check where to apply.

Bachelor’s, master’s or PhD

Residence Permit – Student, in person in New Delhi; all-risk health insurance that pays in Austria.

Your plan follows the six steps.

Where do Sri Lankan students apply, Colombo or New Delhi?

Sri Lankan students lodge short visas at the application centre in Sri Lanka and file the student residence permit, as a rule, only in New Delhi (Austrian Embassy New Delhi, 2026). After lawful entry on a visa issued for another purpose, filing in Austria may be possible case by case (§ 21 (2) Z 6 NAG, OeAD), but filing does not let you stay beyond your visa (§ 21 (6) NAG). The embassy has outsourced visa applications to VFS: files are lodged at the “Application Centers India, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal or Sri Lanka”, while “residence permits … have to be applied at the Austrian embassy in New Delhi in person” (bmeia.gv.at). The embassy also warns that “due to high demand there may be a longer waiting time for appointments” (Embassy New Delhi), so plan ahead: OeAD advises students to “submit your initial application for a ‘Residence Permit-Student’ six months in advance, if possible” (OeAD).

Consular fees are paid “in INR at the current exchange rate”. We found no official amount in Sri Lankan rupees, no VFS service fee and no address of the centre in Sri Lanka on an Austrian government page. Take them from the booking site and check the date. For the New Delhi appointment, check India’s current entry rules for Sri Lankan citizens yourself; we did not find them on an official source we can link. India, Nepal and Bangladesh share this embassy and have their own pages.

What is on the Austria visa checklist for Sri Lanka?

The Austria visa checklist for Sri Lanka, the embassy’s separate “Visa, Checklist, Sri Lanka” (updated August 2026) for visas C and D, lists the application form, passport, photo, trip and funds documents, and Sri Lanka-only items such as EPF proof for employees and a Gramasevaka letter as residence proof. The minimum travel medical insurance for a visa C or D is €30,000 (Sri Lanka checklist, August 2026). Documents must be arranged “in same order” as listed (bmeia.gv.at PDF). It is not the list for the student residence permit (that one is on Austria visa documents checklist), but you need it for any summer school, exchange semester or visit.

The same checklist sets the timing. Processing can take “up to 15 working days”, in individual cases up to 45 calendar days; files that reach the embassy less than 15 working days before travel are returned, so apply at least one month ahead and not earlier than six months before departure. The embassy may call you for an interview. One quirk is that item 4 of the Sri Lanka PDF still refers to a “Nepali Residency Permit” for non-nationals. If you are not Sri Lankan, ask VFS which proof of legal stay in Sri Lanka they need.

How do you get the Residence Permit – Student from Sri Lanka?

The Residence Permit – Student from Sri Lanka is filed, as a rule, in person at the Austrian Embassy New Delhi (§ 21 NAG) with admission, funds for 12 months, accommodation, all-risk health insurance and the €218 fee (2026); the authority in Austria decides within 90 days, plus 90 if documents must be added (OeAD). OeAD advises filing six months before you plan to travel if possible. The permit is valid for 12 months and is renewed each year with proof of study success. Renewal details are on Austria student residence permit, the visa side on Austria student visa, and universities and costs on study in Austria.

The Sri Lankan route to an Austrian degree takes six steps.

  1. 1
    Get your admission

Apply to the university first; the admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid) is the core of the permit file.

  2. 2
    Prepare money and papers

Funds for 12 months in your own account and proof of accommodation; obtain Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication, then ask the Austrian embassy in New Delhi whether further legalisation is required before you translate.

  3. 3
E-mail New Delhi for the appointment

Request the residence-permit appointment at the embassy by e-mail (address on its how-to-apply page) and plan the trip to New Delhi.

  4. 4
File in person in New Delhi

File the Residence Permit – Student and pay the permit fee in Indian rupees. Then wait at home in Sri Lanka.

  5. 5
    Decision in Austria

The residence authority decides within 90 days, plus 90 if documents must be added. The embassy cannot speed it up.

  6. 6
    Visa D, fly, register

Apply for the visa D within 3 months of approval, enter Austria, register your address within 3 working days, collect the card.

The OeAD permit checklist lists no IELTS or German certificate; language requirements are set by each university. The first application cannot be filed through a service provider or an honorary consulate (bmeia.gv.at).

How much money does a Sri Lankan student need for Austria?

A Sri Lankan student under 24 must show €8,670.96 for 12 months (12 × €722.58, OeAD, 2026); from 24 it is €15,700.68 (12 × €1,308.39; base amounts, more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG), in an account in your own name that you can use from Austria (OeAD). The Residence Permit – Student fee is €218 (Austrian Embassy New Delhi, 2026), paid in INR at the current exchange rate, not in LKR. Public universities charge non-EU students €726.72 per semester; we found no official confirmation whether a fee waiver applies to Sri Lankan nationals, so ask your university.

First-year costs for a student from Sri Lanka, by age, 2026 (OeAD, Austrian Embassy New Delhi, Care Concept tariff page, ÖGK; checked 30 October 2026)
ItemUnder 2424 and older
Funds to show (12 months, not a fee)€8,670.96€15,700.68
Residence Permit – Student€218€218
Tuition, public university, two semesters€1,453.44€1,453.44
Care Austria Education unlimited (ages 12–35), 1-year minimum€672 (€56 a month)€672 up to 35
Alternative tariff: Education 364-day (extra MA 35 declaration)€51 a month; 364-day contract (not 12 months), fit for a 12-month permit not confirmedsame
Later, once resident: ÖGK student self-insurance€78.84 a month€78.84 a month

For Care Austria Education (ages 12–35), your age is the calendar year minus your year of birth (the first price uses the year cover starts), and Education has no band change within 12–35; at 36 the person moves to Standard; OeAD’s funds threshold refers to your age (under 24 / from 24). The table leaves out the trip to New Delhi, VFS, translations, rent and living costs, which are on cost of living in Austria.

Do you need an Austria student visa consultant in Sri Lanka?

We found no Austrian rule that requires an Austria student visa consultant in Sri Lanka. The step that matters most is filing the first residence permit, and that is, as a rule (§ 21 NAG), done by you in person in New Delhi. A consultant can help you collect papers or book appointments. If someone lodges a visa C or D for you, the Sri Lanka checklist requires “an original letter of authorization from the applicant bearing the name of the representative and its organization / company” and a copy of their photo ID, and states that “The applicant bears responsibility concerning all content of the application” (checklist). We found no official list of consultants on bmeia.gv.at or oead.at.

Which health insurance do Sri Lankan students need for the permit?

For the Residence Permit – Student, Sri Lankan students need all-risk health insurance that pays in Austria; the travel policy bought for a visa lodged in Sri Lanka does not count. The law asks for health insurance “covering all risks” (§ 11 NAG), and the Interior Ministry says travel health insurance “is in any case not sufficient” (bmi.gv.at, our translation). ÖGK student self-insurance costs €78.84 a month (ÖGK, 2026) and needs habitual residence in Austria, so it can only start after you arrive, and only if you meet its conditions on income, study duration and changes of study (oegk.at). For the first permit, OeAD allows a written statement that you will take it out after entry, with travel insurance until then (OeAD). Ask your residence authority whether it accepts it; the alternative for a file filed, as a rule, in New Delhi (§ 21 NAG) is private all-risk cover from entry. Two pages compare the options, student health insurance in Austria and ÖGK student insurance, and Austria health insurance cost lists every price by age.

Care Austria Education costs €56 a month in 2026 for ages 12–35 with an unlimited term and a 1-year minimum (AVB § 3); the 364-day version costs €51 but needs an extra declaration at Vienna’s MA 35. Cover cannot start before you enter Austria; you apply before the trip or within one year of entry (AVB). Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026) (wien.gv.at). We found no statement by the embassy in New Delhi on any specific insurer. The seller is Care Concept AG, and the insurer is HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG). Ask in writing about pre-existing conditions, and do it before you apply.

Can your spouse or parents come with you from Sri Lanka?

The spouse of a Sri Lankan student can come to Austria on a separate permit; parents cannot use the student’s permit. The spouse of a student can apply for a “Residence Permit – Family Community”, must be at least 21, and the couple must show €2,064.12 a month in 2026, plus €201.88 per child (base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG) (OeAD). Parents need their own settlement permit (with a quota place, income and, as a rule, German A1 before entry, § 21a NAG) or visit on a visa C. Read family reunification in Austria and can I bring my parents to Austria?

Care Austria Standard unlimited for a relative from Sri Lanka: 2026 and from 1 January 2028 (Care Concept tariff page and AVB § 5, checked 30 October 2026)
Relative2026, per monthFrom 1 January 2028
Spouse under 50 (not studying)€155€187
Parent 50–64€222€268
Parent 65–74€510€617

Minimum term 1 year (AVB § 3). Age for these Standard unlimited bands is the calendar year minus the year of birth: the first price uses the year cover starts, and the next band applies from 1 January of the year the person turns 50 or 65 (AVB premium table). A spouse aged 12–35 who studies can use Care Austria Education instead.

How the numbers work for a master’s student from Kandy

Illustrative example: Nadeesha, born in 2001, from Kandy, has an English-taught master’s admission in Vienna and files in New Delhi, the embassy responsible for Sri Lanka. She is 24 or older when she files, so OeAD’s higher rate applies: she shows €15,700.68 for 12 months. She obtains Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication for her degree certificate, asks the embassy in New Delhi by e-mail whether further legalisation is required, then gets a sworn translation and books her appointment. She files in person and pays €218 (2026 fee) in rupees, then flies home to wait.

For the file she takes Care Austria Education unlimited at €56 a month in 2026 (she is in the 12–35 band), which is €672 for the first contract year; cover cannot start before she enters Austria. After approval she applies for the visa D within three months, registers her address within three working days of arrival and collects her card at MA 35. After the first contract year she can compare with ÖGK student self-insurance (if you meet its conditions on income, study duration and changes of study) at €78.84 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Austrian embassy in Sri Lanka?

No, we found no Austrian embassy in Sri Lanka. The embassy in New Delhi covers Sri Lanka: “The Austrian Embassy in India is responsible for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka” (bmeia.gv.at). For short visas you use the application centre in Sri Lanka; the student residence permit is, as a rule, filed in person in New Delhi (§ 21 NAG). The embassy’s list of honorary consulates that offer authentication does not include an office in Sri Lanka (legalisation page).

Where do Sri Lankan students apply for an Austrian student visa?

Where a Sri Lankan student applies depends on the course length. For up to six months (a visa C or D), you book on the VFS website and lodge the file at the application centre in Sri Lanka, which forwards it to the embassy (bmeia.gv.at: how to apply). For a degree you need the Residence Permit – Student, and residence permits “have to be applied at the Austrian embassy in New Delhi in person”, after an e-mail appointment request. So an Austria student visa in Sri Lanka is only possible for short courses; a degree as a rule means a trip to New Delhi (after lawful entry on a visa, § 21 (2) Z 6 NAG may allow filing in Austria, case by case (OeAD), without any right to stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG).

Which documents does the Austrian visa checklist for Sri Lanka ask for?

The embassy’s “Visa, Checklist, Sri Lanka” (updated August 2026) is for visas C and D. Beyond the usual form, passport, ICAO photo and travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, it asks Sri Lankans for things other lists do not: proof of EPF contributions from employees, a “Gramasevaka letter certified by the divisional secretary” as proof of property or residence, form 48 (Companies Act) for business visas, and family bank statements “with balance confirmation letter from the bank” (bmeia.gv.at checklist PDF). Students add a letter confirming permitted leave and their enrolment or programme.

Do I need an Austria student visa consultant in Sri Lanka?

We found no Austrian rule that makes a consultant compulsory for Sri Lankan students. OeAD and the embassy describe the steps for students themselves, and the first residence permit is, as a rule (§ 21 NAG), filed by you in person in New Delhi — a consultant cannot do that for you (bmeia.gv.at). For a visa lodged in Sri Lanka, a representative may submit only with “an original letter of authorization” naming them and their company, plus a copy of their photo ID, and “The applicant bears responsibility concerning all content of the application” (Sri Lanka checklist). We found no official list of consultants.

Do Sri Lankans need a transit visa for an Austrian airport?

Yes, as a rule, Sri Lankans need a visa for a stopover at an Austrian airport. The embassy states that nationals of “Sri Lanka and Syria also need a visa if they do not fall under an existing exception” for a stopover (bmeia.gv.at: how to apply). If you fly to Austria itself on your visa D, the visa covers the entry; the point matters if you fly to another country via Vienna.
