Austria visa from Pakistan 2026: study, work, Islamabad embassy and health insurance
For an Austria visa from Pakistan, a Schengen visa C goes through VFS Global; a visa D, a student residence permit or a Red-White-Red Card is booked by e-mail with the Austrian Embassy Islamabad and, as a rule, filed in person (bmeia.gv.at, 2026). A first permit costs €218. Travel insurance covers a visa, not a permit, except RWR filings with cover well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return costs and first-time students holding OeAD’s statement until ÖGK starts.
The chips show 2026 Care Austria prices for residence permits and longer stays. Because cover cannot start before entry into Austria, none of these tariffs works as the travel insurance for a visa C or D. On the unlimited tariffs, ordinary cancellation is possible only after 1 year and then only to 31 December with 1 month’s notice (AVB § 3); the unlimited Standard tariff rises from 2028 under the policy terms. Vienna’s MA 35 asks for an extra declaration if you choose the 364-day tariff.
Which Austria visa from Pakistan do you need?
Up to six months in Austria means a visa C or D for a Pakistani citizen, while a degree, a job or family life needs a residence permit. Pakistan is on the list of countries whose citizens need a Schengen visa (Interior Ministry visa list), and the Austrian Embassy Islamabad defines the visa D as “entitling holders to stays of 91 days to 6 months in Austria” (Embassy Islamabad: visa). Each box below covers one kind of stay.
Short visits, business trips and family visits (up to 90 days)
You need a Schengen visa C, booked online with VFS Global, and travel medical insurance of at least €30,000. Care Austria does not work as travel insurance here.
Next, see where to apply.
Course or internship (up to 6 months)
This takes a visa C (VFS) or a visa D (e-mail appointment at the embassy), plus travel insurance of at least €30,000.
More on this under studying from Pakistan.
A degree, a job offer or a job search
The documents here are the student residence permit, Red-White-Red Card, Blue Card or job seeker visa, as a rule filed in person at the embassy. Blue Card and RWR card applicants, and students case by case per OeAD, may file in Austria after lawful entry and during their lawful stay (§ 21 (2) NAG). For students and the Blue Card this gives no right to stay beyond the visa (§ 21 (6) NAG). Permits need all-risk insurance.

My wife, children or parents will follow
If you hold a Red-White-Red Card or Blue Card, your spouse and minor children can apply for the Red-White-Red Card plus. Parents have no family route on your permit.
The options are under bringing your family.

| Insurance for visas | Schengen-wide travel insurance, minimum €30,000, incl. medical repatriation | Embassy Islamabad: visa |
| Insurance for permits | All-risk cover that pays in Austria; travel insurance “in any case not sufficient” (Red-White-Red Card filing: travel cover “well above €30,000” incl. rescue and return costs accepted; first student permit: travel cover until ÖGK student insurance starts, with a written statement — ask the authority) | § 11 NAG, bmi.gv.at, FAQ, OeAD |
All three figures below come from the Austrian Embassy Islamabad. A first temporary Austrian residence permit costs €218 at the Austrian Embassy Islamabad, paid in rupees (bmeia.gv.at, 2026). For an adult, a Schengen visa C costs €90 and a visa D €195 (Embassy Islamabad, 2026); the lower child rates are in the table above. Legalising Pakistani documents costs PKR 36,000 per batch of up to six documents plus €80 per document (Embassy Islamabad, 2026). The Austrian embassy visa application page shows which embassy handles which country.
Does an Austria visa application from Pakistan go to VFS Global or the embassy?
Only the Schengen visa C and document legalisation go through VFS Global, while the visa D, the student residence permit and the Red-White-Red Card start with an e-mail appointment request to the consulate of the Austrian Embassy Islamabad (bmeia.gv.at). This is different from India, where VFS also takes visa D applications (Austria visa from India). For a first residence permit, “In principle, it is mandatory to submit the initial application for a residence permit in person”, and not through a service provider, another Schengen embassy or an honorary consulate (bmeia.gv.at).
| Application | Where you file | How to book | Who decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa C (visit, business, up to 90 days) | VFS Global: Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi | Online with VFS; at the earliest 6 months, at the latest 15 days before departure | Embassy Islamabad |
| Visa D (91 days to 6 months, incl. job seeker visa) | Consulate of the embassy | E-mail request to the consulate | Embassy Islamabad |
| Student residence permit | In person at the embassy | E-mail request with the Appointment Request form | Residence authority in Austria (MA 35 in Vienna) |
| Red-White-Red Card (plus) | In person at the embassy (Red-White-Red Card: or your employer files in Austria) | E-mail request with the form; longer waiting times | Residence authority in Austria (for the Red-White-Red Card after the AMS check) |
| Settlement permit except gainful employment (quota 2027) | Embassy | Separate online reservation | Residence authority in Austria |
| Legalisation of Pakistani documents | VFS Global, checked by the embassy | VFS appointment only; e-mails are not processed | Embassy Islamabad |
Fees are paid in Pakistani rupees at an exchange rate the embassy adjusts every month, in cash at the application centres or by cash or card at the embassy (bmeia.gv.at). We found no VFS service fee in rupees on an official page. Fingerprints are taken unless they were collected for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months. The embassy cannot report on a permit case or speed it up, because the decision “rests exclusively with the federal provinces” (bmeia.gv.at).
Do you need an Austria student visa consultant in Pakistan?
You do not need an Austria student visa consultant in Pakistan. The embassy deals with applicants directly and says that it “does not collaborate with intermediaries or agencies” (Embassy Islamabad). Nor can it report on or speed up a permit case, because the decision “rests exclusively with the federal provinces” (bmeia.gv.at). A warning on the embassy’s home page adds that false information, including a fraudulent phone number, circulates in Google searches; the number on its own website is +92 (51) 8770 700. If you pay someone for help with forms, check every fact against the embassy page, Austria student visa and the printable documents checklist.
What does the Austria study visa from Pakistan require of Pakistani students?
For a full degree, the Austria student visa for Pakistani students is in law the “Residence Permit – Student”, not a visa: applicants show university admission, funds for 12 months, accommodation and all-risk health insurance and pay the €218 fee. As a rule, the application is filed in person in Islamabad after an e-mail appointment request. The decision period is 90 days, plus 90 if documents must be added (OeAD). Universities and admission are covered on study in Austria, and the full student permit checklist, with the IELTS question, on Austria student visa.
Austria student visa requirements for Pakistan, in the order you need them.
The list draws on OeAD: Residence Permit – Student, Embassy Islamabad: how to apply and the embassy page on legalisation. In your case the authority can ask for more documents.
What is the Austria study visa cost from Pakistan in the first year?
The official part of the first-year bill for a Pakistani student under 24 is the €218 permit fee, tuition and health insurance, and you must also show €8,670.96 in funds (12 × €722.58). Public universities charge non-EU students €726.72 per semester (2026; study in Austria). Legalisation adds PKR 36,000 per batch of up to six documents and €80 per document (bmeia.gv.at).
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Residence Permit – Student | €218 | Embassy Islamabad |
| Funds to show (12 months, under 24) | €8,670.96 (not a fee — your own money) | OeAD |
| Tuition, public university, two semesters | €1,453.44 (2 × €726.72) | oesterreich.gv.at |
| Legalisation, one batch of 3 documents | PKR 36,000 + €240 (3 × €80) | Embassy Islamabad |
| Health insurance, Care Austria Education unlimited | €56 a month = €672 for the first 12 months (more if cover does not start on 1 January) | Care Concept tariff page, AVB § 3 |
| Alternative once resident: ÖGK student self-insurance | €78.84 a month | oesterreich.gv.at |
We found no official figures for flights, VFS service fees or translation costs, so the table leaves them out. For living costs see cost of living in Austria; student cover is compared on student health insurance in Austria.
Routes from Pakistan to Austria for study, work, job search and family
Austria has no general immigration visa. You pick one purpose, and the permit follows from it. The table summarises each route; the details are on the linked pages.
| Route | Document | Key condition | Insurance for the application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Degree studies | Residence Permit – Student (€218), then visa D to enter | Admission; funds for 12 months (OeAD) | All-risk cover paying in Austria; travel insurance only until ÖGK student insurance starts, with a written statement (OeAD; ask the authority) |
| Course or internship up to 6 months | Visa C or D | Admission or internship; internships need AMS permission | Travel insurance, at least €30,000 |
| Job offer (skilled worker) | Red-White-Red Card (€218) | Points and a positive AMS check; 8-week legal decision limit | All-risk; travel cover well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return costs accepted at application |
| Job offer, degree, high salary | EU Blue Card | Degree of at least 3 years; at least €55,678 gross a year (2026) | All-risk cover until employment subject to compulsory health insurance gives ÖGK cover from the first working day (not a marginal job at or below €551.10 a month, 2026) |
| Job search (Very Highly Qualified only) | Job seeker visa = visa D for 6 months (€195) | At least 70 points confirmed by the AMS; no work on this visa | All-risk; the official checklist names comprehensive travel insurance as an example |
| Wife and children of workers | Red-White-Red Card plus | Spouse at least 21 and German A1 unless exempt; legalised marriage and birth documents | Own proof; ÖGK co-insurance may be possible once resident, if the worker's job is subject to compulsory health insurance (not a marginal job) |
| Parents of a non-EU resident, and retirees, with own income | Settlement permit – except gainful employment (quota) | Own income, a quota place and German A1; online reservation for 2027 in Islamabad; parents or parents-in-law whom an Austrian, EEA or Swiss citizen in Austria (or an Austrian's spouse) actually supports have quota-free routes (§ 47 (3), § 52 (1) Z 3 NAG) | All-risk; travel insurance not sufficient |
How to apply from Pakistan in six steps, in the same order for every long-stay route.
- 1Match the document to your length of stay
A stay of up to 90 days needs a Schengen visa C, and one of 91 days to 6 months a visa D. Anything longer (degree, job, family) needs a residence permit. Job seekers with at least 70 points use the job seeker visa, which is a visa D.
- 2Secure the reason for your stay first
University admission (Zulassungsbescheid), a job offer for the Red-White-Red Card or Blue Card, or the AMS points for the job seeker visa.
- 3Legalise your Pakistani documents early
Start with MOFA, then book a VFS legalisation appointment for the embassy check. This can take three months or more, so start before you book the visa appointment.
- 4Book the right counter
A visa C is booked online with VFS Global (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi). For a visa D, a student residence permit or a Red-White-Red Card, send an e-mail request to the consulate of the embassy in Islamabad; students and workers attach the Appointment Request form.
- 5File in person, give biometrics, wait
Residence permits are decided by the authority in Austria, with a decision period of 90 days for students and a legal limit of 8 weeks for the Red-White-Red Card. After a positive decision the embassy contacts you.
- 6Collect the visa D and fly
With the approval in hand, request the visa D within 3 months of notification, travel to Austria, collect the permit card and register your address.
Which Austria work visa for Pakistani citizens, and what does it require?
An Austria work visa from Pakistan (people also search for an Austria work permit for Pakistani citizens) is in law a residence permit with labour market access. Examples are an employed Red-White-Red Card category and the EU Blue Card, both of which need a qualifying job offer from an Austrian employer; self-employed key workers and start-up founders follow separate RWR rules. The AMS checks the category's conditions, e.g. points, training and pay, before the residence authority decides (migration.gv.at). Your employer may file in Austria, or you request an appointment with the embassy in Islamabad using its form; the embassy warns of longer waiting times for these appointments because of very high demand (bmeia.gv.at). Types and points are on Red-White-Red Card; the labour market test and Blue Card rules on Austria work visa and EU Blue Card Austria.
On the Austria work visa price in Pakistan, the Red-White-Red Card costs €218 and an adult’s visa D €195, both paid in rupees at the embassy’s monthly rate (bmeia.gv.at, visa). The Austria work visa requirements for Pakistani applicants are those of the card type, plus legalised civil documents where the authority asks for them.
Can Pakistanis get the Austria job seeker visa from Pakistan?
Pakistanis can get the Austria job seeker visa if they are Very Highly Qualified Workers. It is a six-month visa D for looking for work, decided by the embassy after the AMS confirms at least 70 points, and it does not allow you to work (migration.gv.at). From Pakistan you request the visa D appointment by e-mail with the consulate in Islamabad; the fee is €195. The Austria job seeker visa requirements for Pakistani applicants (degree, experience, age, languages and a criteria data sheet) are on Austria job seeker visa. If you find a job, you can apply for the Red-White-Red Card in Austria.
What is the Austria visa ratio or success rate from Pakistan?
We found no official Austria visa ratio from Pakistan on bmeia.gv.at, the Interior Ministry’s pages or OeAD (searched October 2026). That goes for an Austria student visa success rate from Pakistan, an Austria study visa ratio for Pakistani students and an Austria work visa ratio for Pakistani applicants alike. Percentages on agent websites may describe Schengen short-stay visas, not student or work permits, so we do not repeat them. The only official approval-related figure we know comes from Austria’s Court of Audit, which reported that in 2022 the AMS gave a positive opinion on 79 % of Red-White-Red Card and Blue Card applications (all nationalities, AMS step only; Court of Audit, 2024; Red-White-Red Card). The part you can influence is the file itself, with legalised documents where the authority asks for them, the right counter and insurance of the right type.
Is Pakistani travel insurance enough for an Austrian residence permit?
Pakistani travel insurance is right for a visa C or D but not enough for an Austrian residence permit. The permit needs health insurance that “covers all risks” and pays in Austria (§ 11 NAG), and the Interior Ministry says travel health insurance “is in any case not sufficient” (bmi.gv.at, our translation). In a Pakistani students’ Facebook group the question comes up in Urdu, “Kia pak sa health insurance lyni hoti hai?” (must it be bought in Pakistan?), and a thread title asks why Care Austria can reject an application (answered on Care Austria). We found no official verdict on any Pakistani insurer, and Vienna’s MA 35 list names 11 insurers, none of them Pakistani (checked 30 October 2026). First-time students have one more route. OeAD says a written statement that ÖGK student insurance will be taken out after entry can be attached to the application, and travel health insurance is then sufficient only until that cover can start (OeAD). Vienna’s MA 35 page does not mention the statement, so ask your residence authority before you rely on it. The rule is explained in full on health insurance for a residence permit, and prices for each age band are on Austria health insurance cost.
| Document | What it needs | Pakistani travel policy | Care Austria |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa C or D (up to 6 months) | Travel insurance, at least €30,000, incl. repatriation | Yes, if it meets the minimum | No — cover cannot start before entry; not a travel policy |
| Student residence permit | All-risk, pays in Austria | Not sufficient on its own (BMI); OeAD: until ÖGK student insurance starts, with a written statement — ask the authority | Education unlimited €56 (ages 12–35; min. 1 year, AVB § 3) |
| Red-White-Red Card, job seeker visa | All-risk; travel cover well above €30,000 accepted at application | Possible if well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return | Only for a documented gap: Standard €155 under 50 (min. 1 year) |
| Wife, parents, retirees | All-risk, pays in Austria | Not sufficient | Standard unlimited by age (table below) |
Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026) (wien.gv.at). We found no confirmation from the embassy or from any authority outside Vienna that it accepts a given policy, so ask the authority handling your file. Care Austria comes from Care Concept AG as the seller, with HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG) as the insurer. You can apply for it while you are still in Pakistan (before the trip) or within one year after entry, but cover cannot start before you enter Austria (AVB). Before you apply, ask in writing about pre-existing conditions. After arrival, students can switch to ÖGK student self-insurance at €78.84 a month once resident, minding the minimum term (ordinary cancellation only after 1 year and then only to 31 December, AVB § 3); employment subject to compulsory health insurance gives ÖGK cover from the first working day. On its own, a marginal job paying at or below €551.10 a month in 2026 gives no statutory health cover.
Can you bring your wife, children or parents from Pakistan?
Spouses and minor children of Red-White-Red Card and Blue Card holders can get a Red-White-Red Card plus. The spouse must be at least 21 and, unless an exemption applies (Blue Card families, for example), show German A1 before entry (migration.gv.at). Marriage and birth certificates need MOFA legalisation, the embassy’s verification and an official translation if they are not in German or English (bmeia.gv.at). Plan for three months or more for that step alone. Parents are not family members on your permit: the law counts only the spouse, the registered partner and minor unmarried children as family members (§ 2 (1) Z 9 NAG). A separate exception covers only parents of a recognised refugee, or of a minor with subsidiary protection, who was an unaccompanied minor when applying for protection (§ 46a (5) Z 2 and 3 NAG). Otherwise parents need their own settlement permit with an income test and a quota place (Islamabad runs an online reservation for the 2027 quota), or they visit on a visa C. Read family reunification in Austria and can I bring my parents to Austria?. Once a wife lives in Austria, ÖGK co-insurance may be possible if her husband’s job is subject to compulsory health insurance (a marginal job does not count); until then she needs private all-risk cover.
| Relative | 2026, per month | From 1 January 2028 |
|---|---|---|
| Wife or husband under 50 | €155 | €187 |
| Spouse or parent 50–64 | €222 | €268 |
| Parent 65–74 | €510 | €617 |
For these bands Care Austria takes the current calendar year minus the year of birth, so the starting price depends on the year cover begins, and a relative moves up a band on 1 January of the year they turn 50 or 65 (AVB premium table). Each row carries a minimum term of 1 year (AVB § 3), and the unlimited Standard tariff rises on 1 January 2028 under the policy terms. If you are older, ask Care Concept AG in writing whether a new contract can still start at your age.
How Ayesha, a master’s student from Lahore, gets her permit
Illustrative example: Ayesha, 23, from Lahore, is admitted to a master’s programme at a public university in Vienna. She has her degree and birth certificate MOFA-legalised and books a VFS legalisation appointment for the embassy check (PKR 36,000 plus €80 per document; it can take three months or longer). She then e-mails the consulate in Islamabad with the Appointment Request form and files the Residence Permit – Student in person, with her admission letter, proof of €8,670.96 for 12 months, accommodation, police clearance and the €218 fee.
For the permit file she wants all-risk insurance that pays in Austria from entry, rather than a travel policy plus the OeAD written statement. She picks Care Austria Education unlimited at €56 a month. The first 12 months cost €672 (more if cover does not start on 1 January, AVB § 3), and cover starts the day she enters Austria. Once the permit is approved, the embassy contacts her; she applies for the visa D to collect it within three months, and after arrival collects her permit card at MA 35 and registers her address. ÖGK student self-insurance at €78.84 a month is an option she could switch to later, once the minimum term lets her cancel (AVB § 3).
Health insurance for your permit file from Pakistan
- Care Austria Education unlimited, for students aged 12–35, costs €56 a month (2026)
- For wives, husbands, job starters with a gap and anyone else under 50, Care Austria Standard unlimited costs €155 a month that year
- Expect a minimum term of 1 year (AVB § 3). Cover cannot start before you enter Austria, so the plan is not a visa C or D travel policy
- For students aged 12–35, choose the 364-day Education tariff (€51 a month) only together with an extra MA 35 declaration; it is not offered here as visa D cover
- Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026)
The plan is insured by HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG) and sold by Care Concept AG. Go through the full plan and limits first, and ask about pre-existing conditions in writing before you apply.

Frequently asked questions
Is a health insurance policy bought in Pakistan enough for the Austrian residence permit?
No, as a rule, a travel policy bought in Pakistan is not enough for the permit; there are two stated exceptions. A residence permit needs health insurance that covers all risks and pays in Austria (§ 11 NAG), and the Interior Ministry says travel health insurance “is in any case not sufficient” for it (bmi.gv.at, our translation). A travel policy of at least €30,000 with medical repatriation is what a visa C or D needs (Embassy Islamabad: visa). The first exception is the Red-White-Red Card and job seeker context, where travel health insurance “well above €30,000” incl. rescue and return costs is accepted at application (migration.gv.at FAQ). The second exception is a first student permit: OeAD says a written statement that ÖGK student insurance will be taken out after entry can be attached, with travel insurance only until then (OeAD) — ask your residence authority. We found no official verdict on any Pakistani insurer, and Vienna’s MA 35 list names 11 insurers, none of them Pakistani (checked 30 October 2026). When to buy is explained on health insurance for a residence permit.
Do I need an agent or consultant to apply at the Austrian Embassy in Islamabad?
No, you do not need an agent or consultant to apply at the Austrian Embassy in Islamabad. The embassy states: “The embassy does not collaborate with intermediaries or agencies,” and “Official information are only available through the embassy's website” (Austrian Embassy Islamabad). The embassy cannot report on or speed up a permit case, because the decision “rests exclusively with the federal provinces” (bmeia.gv.at). The embassy also warns that a false phone number circulates in Google results; the number it gives is +92 (51) 8770 700.
How do I book an appointment for an Austrian student residence permit or visa D in Pakistan?
By e-mail to the consulate of the Austrian Embassy Islamabad, not through VFS. The embassy’s how-to-apply page lists the visa D, the Red-White-Red Card and the student residence permit among the cases handled by an e-mail request; for students and the Red-White-Red Card you attach the embassy’s Appointment Request form (Word) (bmeia.gv.at). Use the e-mail link on the embassy page itself. Only the Schengen visa C is booked online through VFS Global, which has centres in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. For Red-White-Red Card appointments the embassy warns that “waiting times for an appointment may be longer” (embassy home page).
Do my Pakistani documents need to be legalised for Austria?
If the Austrian authority asks for legalised documents, yes, and the order matters. First the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) legalises the original; the embassy accepts documents only if that legalisation is “affixed directly on the original document”. Then you book a legalisation appointment through VFS Global; the embassy charges a verification fee of PKR 36,000 for up to six documents plus a consular fee of €80 per document, and processing may take three months or longer (Embassy Islamabad: legalisation). Documents not in German or English, such as a Nikah Nama, need an official translation. Which documents your permit file needs legalised depends on the case — ask before you start.
What are the requirements to bring my wife to Austria from Pakistan?
Your wife (at least 21) and minor children can get a Red-White-Red Card plus if you hold a Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card (migration.gv.at). Unless an exemption applies (for example if you hold an EU Blue Card or a Red-White-Red Card for Very Highly Qualified Workers), she must show German at A1 level before she moves to Austria. She files her first application, as a rule, in person at the embassy in Islamabad and needs her own proof of all-risk health insurance; a Nikah Nama must be MOFA-legalised, verified by the embassy and translated (bmeia.gv.at). Once she lives in Austria she may be co-insured on your ÖGK cover if your job is subject to compulsory health insurance (a marginal job does not count) (ÖGK co-insurance); until then, Care Austria Standard costs €155 a month under 50 (2026, minimum term 1 year, AVB § 3). Details: family reunification in Austria.
What is the correct phone number of the Austrian Embassy in Islamabad?
+92 (51) 8770 700, at 7 A, Street 21, F 8-2, Islamabad. The embassy warns on its home page that false information, including a fraudulent phone number, appears in Google searches (Austrian Embassy Islamabad). Always take contact details and the e-mail link from the embassy’s own website.
