Austria student visa 2026: requirements, costs, processing time and health insurance

Quick answer

Students who need a visa: C or D visa up to six months; for a degree, the “Residence Permit – Student” plus visa D. Fee €218; funds €722.58 a month under 24 (€1,308.39 from 24) for 12 months (OeAD, 2026; more if rent exceeds €386.43). Travel insurance alone is not enough: OeAD accepts a written statement on later ÖGK cover, with travel insurance only until then (ask your authority). Care Austria Education: €56 a month (1-year minimum).

Students 12–35, unlimited: €56/month (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3)364-day tariff, extra MA 35 declaration: €51/month

Both are Care Austria Education’s 2026 prices. On the unlimited tariff, ordinary cancellation is possible only after 1 year and then only to 31 December with one month’s notice (AVB § 3). The 364-day tariff needs an extra declaration for Vienna’s MA 35, and we do not present it as cover for a 12-month permit. Cover cannot start before you enter Austria.

Visa or residence permit: which do you need?

Whether you need an Austria student visa or an Austria study visa in the form of a residence permit depends on how long you stay. Up to six months it is a visa, and for more than six months it is a residence title. OeAD, Austria’s agency for international study, draws the same line between a “Visa for nationals from third countries (stay up to 6 months)” and a “Residence title … (stay of more than 6 months)” (OeAD).

Up to 90 days, visa-free nationality

No visa needed for a stay of less than 90 days if your passport allows visa-free entry; visa-free stays are limited to 90 days within 180 days (OeAD).

Read on at insurance for short stays.

One semester or a course, up to 6 months

Visa C (up to 90 days in 180) or visa D (91 days to 6 months), with admission and travel health insurance of at least €30,000.

See the section on courses and short stays.

A full degree programme

You need the “Residence Permit – Student” first, then a visa D to enter and collect it, with funds for 12 months and all-risk insurance. Visa-free nationals may instead file in Austria after lawful entry and during a lawful stay (§ 21 (2) Z 6 NAG), but this gives no right to stay beyond the visa-free period (§ 21 (6) NAG).

What are the Austria student visa requirements?

The Austria student visa requirements for a degree are a letter of admission, proof of funds for 12 months, accommodation, all-risk health insurance, a police clearance certificate and the €218 fee (OeAD checklist). The student permit fee of €218 is not refunded if the application is refused or withdrawn (OeAD, 2026). The law exempts the student permit from proof of accommodation (BMI), but the OeAD checklist still asks for it, so bring a contract if asked. Foreign documents must be legalised and translated into German by a sworn translator, although “Documents in English language are also accepted in some cases” (OeAD). Here is the Austria student visa document checklist for the first application.

For a short stay (visa C or D up to six months) the list is different. It asks for admission confirmation, funds for the visa period, accommodation, travel health insurance of at least €30,000, a travel booking and proof of ties to home (OeAD). The visa D form is on bmeia.gv.at (PDF). A printable list for every permit will follow on Austria visa documents.

How much money do you need? Bank statement and proof of funds

Austria student visa financial requirements for 2026 are €722.58 a month under 24 and €1,308.39 from age 24, shown for 12 months in advance (OeAD). These are base amounts, and you need more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43 a month (§ 11 (5) NAG). The money must be in an account in your name that you can access from Austria, or a guarantee or scholarship can take its place (OeAD). We found no official requirement for a blocked account.

Some agency websites quote a fixed “12,000 euros”. That figure conflicts with these official 2026 amounts, so use OeAD’s numbers. The amounts are checked again at every renewal of the permit.

What is the Austria student visa total cost in the first year?

The Austria student visa total cost in the first year is €2,395.84 in fixed costs for a non-EU student at a public university in 2026 (our arithmetic). That sum covers the permit fee, tuition, the student union fee and health insurance. It leaves out the visa D fee, and it comes on top of the funds you must show. The table builds this Austria student visa cost from official amounts and Care Concept’s tariff prices.

How to apply for an Austria student visa: the process

As a rule, you apply for the Austria student visa and the student permit in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate responsible for your country of residence (§ 21 (1) NAG). § 21 (2) Z 6 NAG also lets student-permit applicants file at the residence authority in Austria after lawful entry and during a lawful stay. According to OeAD, visa-free nationals may do so; after entry on a visa issued for another purpose, OeAD says it “may be possible” after a case-by-case examination, and not if filing in Austria was the hidden reason for that visa. Filing in Austria gives no right to stay beyond the visa or visa-free period (§ 21 (6) NAG). Country guides cover the embassy steps for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria and Sri Lanka. For a degree programme, these are the steps.

  1. 1
    Admission first

Get your letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) from the university. The permit file is not complete without it.

  2. 2
    Book the embassy appointment

Apply in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country of residence; some embassies use an appointment service. OeAD advises filing six months ahead if possible, at least three months before entry.

  3. 3
    File the permit application

Hand in the checklist documents and pay the permit fee. The authority in Austria decides; the decision period is 90 days, plus 90 days if documents must be added.

  4. 4
    Collect the visa D

After approval you have three months to apply for a visa D (valid four months) to enter, and six months from the notification to collect the permit in Austria.

  5. 5
    Arrive and register

Register your address within three working days of arrival, collect the permit card at the residence authority (MA 35 in Vienna), then enrol.

Do not count on switching from a short visa to the permit inside Austria: OeAD examines such applications case by case, filing does not let you stay beyond your visa (§ 21 (6) NAG), and a visa D cannot be extended in Austria (bmeia.gv.at). Permit renewals and study-success rules will be on Austria student residence permit and residence permit renewal. In Vienna the residence authority is MA 35 (see MA 35 Vienna in English).

What is the Austria student visa processing time?

The Austria student visa processing time for the “Residence Permit – Student” is a legal decision period of 90 days, extended by another 90 days if documents must be added (OeAD). OeAD advises filing “six months in advance, if possible”, and at least three months before you plan to arrive. For a short-stay visa, apply at the earliest six months and no later than 15 days before travel; OeAD recommends at least four weeks. Visa D decisions in general may take up to six months (bmeia.gv.at).

Austria student visa appointment and interview. Appointment waiting times differ by embassy, and we found no official figure, so book as soon as your admission letter is in sight. The official pages we checked say only that you file in person; they do not say whether embassies hold a student-visa interview.

Can you get an Austria student visa without IELTS?

IELTS is not on the official checklist for the Austria student visa or the student permit: the OeAD checklist names no language certificate, and admission, including language proof, “is organised by the educational institutions themselves” (Study in Austria). Whether you can study without IELTS therefore depends on your programme. English-taught programmes may ask for IELTS, TOEFL or another proof; German-taught programmes need “sufficient German knowledge” and may set an exam, and a university preparation programme needs at least A2 to start (migration.gv.at). Check your university’s admission page for the score.

What is the Austria student visa success rate?

We found no official Austria student visa success rate, acceptance rate or rejection rate, and no approval ratio for the student permit (searched October 2026: bmeia.gv.at, OeAD, migration.gv.at, parliament and Interior Ministry sources). Percentages on third-party websites are not Austrian decision data, and the Court of Audit’s figures for the Red-White-Red Card are about work permits, not students. What you can control is the file the authority checks, set out in the table below.

Language course visa, Studienkolleg and preparation programmes

A language course of 91 days to six months is a reason for a visa D (bmeia.gv.at); we found no Student residence permit for a language course alone, without a university admission. The university preparation programme (Vorstudienlehrgang, also called Studienkolleg) is different: it is for admitted students who still need German or supplementary exams, so it follows an admission decision (details on study in Austria). Language courses in Austria for international students are a short-stay topic; plan the permit once you hold a regular admission.

Which health insurance do you need for the student visa?

The health insurance for an Austria student visa depends on the document: travel health insurance of at least €30,000 for a visa up to six months, but all-risk health insurance that pays in Austria for the student permit. For the permit, OeAD states that “A travel insurance does not fulfil this requirement in any case” (OeAD, page for scholars from non-EU countries, stays over 6 months). ÖGK student self-insurance can only start after you arrive and enrol, but OeAD says a written statement that you will take it out after entry can be attached to the permit application; travel insurance then covers only the time until you take it out, and you later show the ÖGK confirmation to the residence authority (OeAD). Vienna’s page asks for proof of insurance and does not mention such a statement, so ask your residence authority first. The full legal rule is on health insurance for a residence permit. The student options are compared on study in Austria and student health insurance in Austria, and all prices by age are on Austria health insurance cost.

In 2026, Care Austria Education costs €56 a month (unlimited, ages 12–35, 1-year minimum term), while ÖGK student self-insurance costs €78.84 a month, needs residence in Austria and so starts only after entry (oegk.at, OeAD). Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026) (wien.gv.at). Care Austria Education is sold by Care Concept AG; the insurer is HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG). At 2026 prices, a student within Education’s age band who keeps Care Austria Education pays €274.08 less a year than with ÖGK student insurance. A student who wants to switch to the ÖGK later should remember the minimum term, because ordinary cancellation is possible only after one year and only to 31 December (AVB § 3). Over 35, the unlimited Standard tariff applies instead, at €155 a month under 50 (2026 price, rises from 2028 per the policy terms; 1-year minimum term, AVB § 3).

As of October 2026 (checked 30 October 2026): student permit fee €218; funds €722.58 a month under 24 and €1,308.39 from 24 (OeAD; base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG); travel insurance not sufficient for the permit by itself (OeAD: with a written statement on ÖGK cover after entry attached to the first application, only until ÖGK cover begins; ask your residence authority whether it accepts this route); Care Austria Education €56 a month unlimited, ages 12–35 (Care Concept tariff page); ÖGK student self-insurance €78.84 a month once resident (oegk.at).

Can you work or stay after your studies?

Yes, with an Austrian student permit you can work up to 20 hours a week with an employment permit that your employer applies for at the AMS, without a labour market test (migration.gv.at), and after graduating you can stay to look for work. While you study, a Red-White-Red Card is not possible; the official answer is “No, students cannot obtain a Red-White-Red Card” (migration.gv.at FAQ). After graduating in Austria you can renew the Student permit once for twelve months to look for work, then, when you have a job matching your degree, switch to the Red-White-Red Card for graduates, which needs no points. Other routes are on Austria work visa and Austria job seeker visa.

Bringing your spouse / parents: what should you know first?

Your spouse or parents cannot come on your student permit; each needs their own permit, fee and health insurance. Your spouse or registered partner (at least 21 when applying) and your unmarried minor children can apply for their own “Residence Permit – Family Community” (OeAD). For this, OeAD’s 2026 figures list funds for couples (€2,064.12 a month as a base amount, more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43 a month, § 11 (5) NAG) and €201.88 a month per child. Check family reunification in Austria before you plan. Parents do not count as family members for this permit and need a permit of their own on a different route, set out on can I bring my parents to Austria?

The age band is the calendar year in which cover starts minus the year of birth, and each contract has a minimum term of 1 year (AVB § 3). The co-insurance rules are on ÖGK co-insurance.

Worked example: Rahul’s master’s in Graz

Illustrative example: Rahul, 22, from Hyderabad, receives his letter of admission to an English-taught master’s programme at a public university in Graz in March. His university asked for an English certificate as part of admission; the permit checklist itself does not. He books the embassy appointment right away and files in April, five months before the semester, with his admission letter, a police clearance certificate, a dorm contract and proof of €8,670.96 in his own account (12 × €722.58, because he is under 24). He pays the €218 fee (2026).

Before buying insurance he asks the Graz residence authority whether it accepts Care Austria Education, since the insurer lists we checked are Vienna’s and Linz’s, not Graz’s. He then buys Care Austria Education unlimited at €56 a month (2026 price), starting on his planned arrival date, plus a separate travel policy for the flight. After approval he collects a visa D, lands in September, registers within three working days and collects his permit card in Graz. His fixed first-year costs come to €2,395.84 for fee, tuition, ÖH and insurance. Because the unlimited tariff runs at least one year (AVB § 3), he keeps it rather than switching to ÖGK student insurance at €78.84 a month in his first year. With a September start, his contract runs at least until 31 December of the following year.

Frequently asked questions

Is IELTS mandatory for Austria student visa?

No legal rule we found requires IELTS for the visa or the student permit: the official OeAD checklist for the “Residence Permit – Student” lists no language certificate (OeAD), and we found no language certificate in § 64 NAG. Language requirements come from admission, which “is organised by the educational institutions themselves” (Study in Austria). So IELTS is not on the official visa or permit checklist; your university decides whether it needs English proof and which score. German-taught programmes need sufficient German.

How much bank balance is required for an Austrian student visa?

For the student permit in 2026, OeAD asks for €722.58 a month if you are under 24 and €1,308.39 a month from 24, shown for 12 months in advance — €8,670.96 or €15,700.68 a year (base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG) (OeAD). The money must be in an account in your name that you can access from Austria, or covered by a guarantee or scholarship; bank statements of the last 6 months may be requested to show where it comes from. We found no official blocked-account rule, and round figures such as “12,000 euros” on agency websites do not match OeAD’s 2026 amounts.

Which health insurance do I need for a 4-5 month study stay on a type D visa?

For a stay of up to six months you need a visa (C or D), not a residence permit (OeAD), and for the visa OeAD and bmeia.gv.at ask for travel health insurance of at least €30,000 including repatriation, valid in the whole Schengen area (OeAD). Care Austria is health insurance for your stay, not travel insurance: its cover cannot start before entry into Austria, so it does not cover the journey, and we have no confirmation that it is accepted for a visa D, so check with your embassy. The visa D in general is explained on Austria visa D.

Can I use Care Austria Education for my Austrian student visa?

Partly: Care Austria Education is private all-risk health insurance for the student residence permit, but its cover cannot start before entry, so it is not travel cover for the visa D journey. Care Concept AG is on Vienna’s MA 35 insurer list — Care Austria and Care Austria Education (the unlimited tariffs) need no extra declaration, the 364-day tariffs do (wien.gv.at, checked 30 October 2026). It costs €56 a month unlimited for ages 12–35 (2026), with ordinary cancellation only after 1 year, then only to 31 December with 1 month’s notice (AVB § 3); the 364-day version (€51) needs an extra MA 35 declaration. For the journey on your visa D you need separate travel cover, and acceptance by the embassy for the visa itself is not confirmed to us. Over 35, the Standard tariff applies (€155 under 50 (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3), 2026 price that rises from 2028 per the policy terms).

Can students get a Red-White-Red Card in Austria?

Students cannot get a Red-White-Red Card while they are studying; migration.gv.at confirms “No, students cannot obtain a Red-White-Red Card” (migration.gv.at FAQ). You can work alongside your studies with an employment permit of up to 20 hours a week, which your employer applies for at the AMS without a labour market test (migration.gv.at). After graduating from an Austrian university you can switch to the Red-White-Red Card for graduates — no points needed — once you have a matching job (Red-White-Red Card).

Can I stay in Austria to look for a job after I graduate?

Yes, if you graduate from an Austrian university, you can extend your student permit once: you “may renew your residence permit ‘Students’ for a period of twelve months” to look for work (migration.gv.at FAQ). If you find a job that matches your degree and pays the locally customary salary for junior graduates, you can apply for the Red-White-Red Card for graduates, without points or a labour market test (Red-White-Red Card). Your health insurance must stay valid during the search; a job subject to compulsory health insurance gives ÖGK cover from the first working day. A marginal job at or below €551.10 a month in 2026 does not by itself provide statutory health cover.
