Austria visa from Nepal 2026: study, work, where to apply and health insurance

Quick answer

For an Austria visa from Nepal in 2026, the Austrian Embassy New Delhi is responsible; we found no Austrian embassy in Kathmandu. Visas of up to six months are lodged at the application centre in Nepal; a student or work residence permit is, as a rule, filed in person in New Delhi (bmeia.gv.at). A first permit costs €218; for a permit, travel cover counts only under two narrow exceptions (RWR-card application, first student permit; conditions below).

Students 12–35, unlimited: €56/month (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3)Under 50, unlimited: €155/month (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3)Students 12–35, 364-day tariff, extra MA 35 declaration: €51/month

Care Austria (2026 prices) is for residence permits. Because cover cannot start before entry into Austria, it is not the travel insurance for a visa C or D. Unlimited tariffs allow ordinary cancellation only after 1 year, then only to 31 December with 1 month’s notice (AVB § 3), and the unlimited Standard tariff rises from 2028 per the policy terms. An extra declaration for Vienna’s MA 35 is needed with the 364-day tariff.

Which Austria visa from Nepal do you need?

From Nepal, visas for up to six months are booked through VFS and lodged in Nepal, while anything longer, such as a degree or a job, needs a residence permit, as a rule filed in person at the embassy in New Delhi. Nepali citizens need a visa for the Schengen area but, unlike Bangladeshi citizens, no airport transit visa (Interior Ministry visa list, as of 16 October 2026). The embassy’s Nepal checklist says: “If applicant intends to stay longer than 6 (six) months, Residence Permit (“Aufenthaltstitel”) has to be applied for”, and neither visa can be extended in Austria (checklist PDF). Where do you apply from Nepal, in Kathmandu or in New Delhi?

Short answer: in Nepal you lodge only visas of up to six months, booked through VFS at the application centre in Nepal; a residence permit means, as a rule, a trip to the embassy in New Delhi, an e-mail appointment and fees paid in Indian rupees (bmeia.gv.at). Nepali citizens need a Schengen visa but no airport transit visa (bmi.gv.at).

Nepali applicants use both cities, depending on the document. Short visas are lodged in Nepal, residence permits as a rule in New Delhi. After lawful entry on a visa, student, researcher, Blue Card (+ family) and Red-White-Red Card applicants may file in Austria instead (§ 21 (2) Z 6, 7 NAG; students only case by case, OeAD); Z 6 gives no right to stay beyond the visa (§ 21 (6) NAG), and RWR applicants should ask the authority whether they may stay while it is decided. The embassy has outsourced visa applications to VFS; Nepal applicants sign that they use “VFS Global Services Pvt. Ltd. to apply for a Schengen Visa at the Austrian Desk” (checklist), while the embassy itself still assesses every file. This is the key difference from Bangladesh, where Schengen visas go to the French embassy in Dhaka (Austria visa from Bangladesh), and from India, where visas and permits are lodged at counters inside India (Austria visa from India).

Consular fees are paid in Indian rupees at the current rate (bmeia.gv.at). We found no official amount in Nepali rupees, no VFS service fee and no address of the centre on an Austrian government page. Take them from the booking site and check the date. Austrian embassy visa application shows which Austrian embassy covers which country. For the New Delhi appointment, check India’s current entry rules for Nepali citizens yourself; we did not find them on an official source we can link.

What is on the Austria visa checklist for Nepal?

The embassy publishes a separate checklist for Nepal (updated August 2026) for visas C and D; it is the only Nepal-specific document list we found on an Austrian government site (bmeia.gv.at PDF). It asks for documents “in same order” as listed, and warns that incomplete or faulty documents “can be a reason for refusal”.

The same checklist gives the timing. Processing can take “up to 15 working days”, in individual cases up to 45 calendar days; apply at least one month before travel, and not earlier than six months before departure. The embassy may call you for an interview. The checklist is not the list for a residence permit, which is on Austria visa documents checklist.

How to apply for an Austria student visa from Nepal (requirements and steps)

For a full degree, the Austria student visa for Nepali students is in law the “Residence Permit – Student”. The file needs admission, funds for 12 months, accommodation, all-risk health insurance and the €218 fee (2026), and it is as a rule filed in person in New Delhi (after lawful entry on a visa, case by case also in Austria, § 21 (2) Z 6 NAG, OeAD, without a right to stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG); the authority decides within 90 days, plus 90 if documents must be added (OeAD). Austria student visa requirements from Nepal are the same as for every non-EU student; what changes is the trip to New Delhi and the Kathmandu authentication. Choosing a university is on study in Austria, the visa side on Austria student visa, life on the permit on Austria student residence permit.

Nepal’s education ministry also runs a “No Objection Certificate” portal for study abroad (noc.moest.gov.np). It is a Nepali requirement, not an Austrian one; we did not verify its rules or fee, so check them with the ministry.

How to apply for an Austria student visa from Nepal in six steps.

  1. 1
    Choose by length of stay

For up to 6 months it is a visa C or D, booked on the VFS website and lodged at the application centre in Nepal. More than 6 months (degree, job, family) calls for a residence permit, as a rule filed in person at the embassy in New Delhi (Blue Card and Red-White-Red Card applicants, and students case by case per OeAD, may file in Austria after lawful entry on a visa, § 21 (2) Z 6, 7 NAG; students and Blue Card: no stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG; RWR: ask the authority whether you may stay).

  2. 2
    Get the purpose document

University admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid), a job offer for an employed Red-White-Red Card category or the Blue Card (self-employed and start-up routes differ), or the AMS points confirmation for the job seeker visa.

  3. 3
    Authenticate in Kathmandu

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs first, then the Austrian honorary consulate in Kathmandu (appointment only), then sworn translations.

  4. 4
E-mail New Delhi for the appointment

Request the residence-permit appointment by e-mail (address on the embassy’s how-to-apply page) and plan the trip to New Delhi.

  5. 5
File in person and wait in Nepal

Pay the permit fee in Indian rupees, then wait for the residence authority in Austria to decide (students 90 days, plus 90 if documents are missing).

  6. 6
    Visa D, travel, register

After approval, apply for the visa D within 3 months, enter Austria, collect the permit card and register your address.

What does the first year cost a student from Nepal?

In 2026, the official part of the first-year bill for a Nepali student under 24 is the €218 permit fee, proof of €8,670.96 in funds (12 × €722.58; base, more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG), tuition and health insurance; from 24 the funds rise to €15,700.68. Consular fees are paid in INR at the current exchange rate, not in NPR. Public universities charge non-EU students €726.72 per semester; a waiver exists for nationals of least developed countries, but we found no official confirmation of how universities apply it to Nepal today, so ask yours.

We left out the trip to New Delhi and the VFS, translation and authentication costs, because there are no official figures. Living costs are on cost of living in Austria.

What is the Austria student visa success rate from Nepal?

We found no official Austria student visa success rate from Nepal, and no refusal or approval figures for Nepali applicants on bmeia.gv.at, the Interior Ministry’s pages or OeAD (searched October 2026). Numbers on consultancy websites are not official, so we do not repeat them. The embassy says an incomplete or faulty file can be a reason for refusal (Nepal checklist). Your part is a complete file in the right place, funds for the full 12 months, authenticated documents and the right type of insurance. Comment threads of Nepali students warn “Consultancy KO var naparnus” (don’t rely on consultancies); we found no official rule that requires an agent, and an agent who files for you needs your signed authorisation.

Which permit do you need for an Austria work visa from Nepal?

An Austria work visa from Nepal is, for stays over six months, a residence permit with labour market access, for example an employed Red-White-Red Card category or the EU Blue Card, which need a job offer (self-employed key workers and start-up founders follow their own RWR rules, without a job offer); for the employed categories the AMS checks the conditions, e.g. points, training and pay, before the residence authority decides, while self-employed key workers and start-up founders follow separate procedures (migration.gv.at). The Nepal checklist adds that a short work visa needs a copy of the AMS work permit. Without a job offer and outside the self-employed and start-up routes, only Very Highly Qualified Workers with at least 70 points can get the six-month job seeker visa, which does not allow work (migration.gv.at FAQ). Austria work visa and Red-White-Red Card have the details, and the job search is on job seeker visa.

Which health insurance works for a residence permit from Nepal?

The travel policy you buy for a VFS visa in Nepal is not enough, because the permit needs a policy that covers all risks and pays in Austria. The law asks for health insurance “covering all risks” that is liable to pay in Austria (§ 11 NAG), and the Interior Ministry says travel health insurance “is in any case not sufficient” (bmi.gv.at, our translation). The €30,000 travel cover on the Nepal checklist is for visas C and D only. For a first student permit, OeAD says a written statement that ÖGK student insurance will be taken out after entry can be attached, and travel health insurance is then sufficient only until that cover can start (OeAD); ask your residence authority before you rely on it. We found no official verdict on any Nepali insurer for the permit. The rule is explained on health insurance for a residence permit (Austria health insurance cost lists prices by age); student options on student health insurance in Austria.

It can be more relevant for an accompanying relative who lacks ÖGK cover.

When to buy if your appointment is months away? A Nepali student’s comment sums up the problem: “Embassy date nai 5 month paxi pauxa”, meaning the embassy date is five months away. Care Austria cover cannot start before you enter Austria, and you apply before the trip or within one year after entry (AVB), so you pay for Austria, not for the waiting months in Nepal. Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026) (wien.gv.at). Whether an authority outside Vienna or the embassy accepts a given policy is not confirmed to us, so ask yours. The plan is sold by Care Concept AG and insured by HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG). Ask about pre-existing conditions in writing before you apply.

As of October 2026 (checked 30 October 2026): the Austrian Embassy New Delhi is responsible for Nepal (bmeia.gv.at). A visa C costs €90, a visa D €195 (adult rates) and a temporary residence permit €218 (Embassy New Delhi, 2026). Student funds are €722.58 a month under 24 and €1,308.39 from 24, for 12 months (OeAD, 2026 base amounts; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG). Visas need travel insurance of at least €30,000 (Nepal checklist, August 2026); for permits, travel insurance is not sufficient (BMI; exceptions: Red-White-Red Card filing with travel cover well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return costs; a first student permit with OeAD’s statement on ÖGK student insurance, plus travel insurance until ÖGK cover starts; ask your residence authority). Care Austria Education costs €56 and Standard €155 a month under 50, unlimited, minimum term 1 year (Care Concept tariff page 2026, AVB § 3).

Can your spouse or parents come with you from Nepal?

A spouse can come on their own permit; parents cannot use your permit, because the law counts only spouses, registered partners and minor unmarried children as family members (§ 2 (1) Z 9 NAG). The spouse of a student can apply for a “Residence Permit – Family Community”, must be at least 21, and the couple must show €2,064.12 a month (2026; base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG) (OeAD); OeAD makes no difference between bachelor’s and master’s students. The spouse of a Red-White-Red Card or Blue Card holder can apply for the Red-White-Red Card plus; the spouse must be at least 21 and show German A1 before entry unless an exemption applies, e.g. for families of Blue Card holders (migration.gv.at; § 21a NAG). Parents cannot derive a family permit from your student or work permit. A separate exception covers only parents of a recognised refugee, or of a minor with subsidiary protection, who was an unaccompanied minor when applying for protection (§ 46a (5) Z 2 and 3 NAG, RIS). Otherwise they must qualify on their own, e.g. with a settlement permit on their own income (§ 44 NAG, quota-bound; €2,616.78 single / €4,128.24 couple (spouses or registered partners living together) a month in 2026, more if regular costs exceed €386.43), their own work or study permit, or a visit on a Schengen visa C. Read family reunification in Austria and can I bring my parents to Austria?; once a worker’s spouse lives in Austria, ÖGK co-insurance may be possible, at an extra 3.4 % of the insured person’s contribution base unless an exemption applies (§ 51d ASVG).

Step by step with a bachelor’s student from Pokhara

Illustrative example: Sita, 22, from Pokhara, has a bachelor’s admission from a public university in Vienna and files in New Delhi, as we found no Austrian embassy in Kathmandu. She has her school certificates authenticated by Nepal’s foreign ministry and then at the Austrian honorary consulate in Kathmandu, and has them translated. Because she is under 24, she shows €8,670.96 for 12 months (2026 base amount). She e-mails the embassy in New Delhi, waits for her appointment and files the Residence Permit – Student in person, paying €218 in rupees.

For the permit she takes Care Austria Education unlimited at €56 a month (2026 price). For the first 12 months that is €672 (more if cover does not start on 1 January, AVB § 3), and cover cannot start before she enters Austria. After approval she applies for the visa D within three months, flies to Vienna, collects her card and registers her address. After the first contract year she could compare with ÖGK student self-insurance at €78.84 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Austrian embassy in Nepal?

No, we found no Austrian embassy in Nepal. The Austrian Embassy in New Delhi covers Nepal; its home page states: “The Austrian Embassy in India is responsible for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka” (bmeia.gv.at). In Kathmandu there is an Austrian honorary consulate that offers certain authentication services, by appointment only (Embassy New Delhi: legalisation). It does not decide visas or residence permits. For short visas you use the application centre in Nepal; for a residence permit you go to New Delhi in person.

Where do Nepali citizens submit an Austrian visa application?

Nepali citizens lodge visas of up to six months at the application centre in Nepal and file residence permits, as a rule, in person in New Delhi. For a visa of up to six months (visa C up to 90 days, visa D from 91 to 180 days) you book on the VFS website and lodge the file at the application centre in Nepal; the embassy names “Application Centers India, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal or Sri Lanka” (bmeia.gv.at: how to apply). Residence permits for more than six months, the job seeker visa and work-programme visas “have to be applied at the Austrian embassy in New Delhi in person”, after an e-mail appointment request; after lawful entry on a visa, students, Blue Card and Red-White-Red Card applicants may instead file their permit in Austria (students only case by case, OeAD; § 21 (2) Z 6, 7 NAG; students and Blue Card: no stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG; RWR applicants: ask the authority whether they may stay). We did not find the centre’s address on an official Austrian page, so check it on the VFS booking site.

Can a Nepali bachelor student bring a dependant to Austria?

Yes, the spouse of a Nepali bachelor student can apply for a residence permit, whatever the degree level. OeAD describes a separate “Residence Permit – Family Community” for spouses, registered partners and unmarried minor children of students and does not distinguish between bachelor’s, master’s or PhD students; spouses must be at least 21 when they apply (OeAD). In 2026 the couple must show €2,064.12 a month for 12 months, plus €201.88 per child (base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG), and the spouse needs their own all-risk health insurance. Care Austria Standard costs €155 a month under 50 (2026, minimum term 1 year). Read family reunification in Austria.

Why is the Austrian embassy appointment for Nepali students months away?

The embassy warns of longer waits for visa appointments because of high demand (Embassy New Delhi); we found no official waiting time for residence-permit appointments, so request yours as soon as you have the admission letter. After filing, the residence authority in Austria decides — for students within 90 days, plus 90 if documents must be added (OeAD) — and the embassy “cannot give any information on current proceedings nor influence the processing time” (bmeia.gv.at).

Which documents does the Austrian visa checklist for Nepal ask for?

The embassy’s “Checklist Visa for Nepal” (updated August 2026) covers visas C and D only. It asks for the form in English or German, a passport issued within the last 10 years with two blank pages, an ICAO photo, a copy of the Nepalese citizenship certificate, travel medical insurance of at least €30,000, bank statements stamped and signed by the bank for the last six months, and — for the self-employed — PAN registration. Property papers (“Lal purja”) and tax clearance can support solvency (bmeia.gv.at checklist PDF). Students on a short course add the admission certificate; workers add the AMS work permit.

Where are Nepali documents authenticated for Austria?

Nepali documents are first authenticated by Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs: the embassy says that consular legalisation “always requires prior authentication by the relevant Ministry of Foreign Affairs” (Embassy New Delhi: legalisation). The Austrian honorary consulate in Kathmandu provides certain authentication services, by appointment only. Bring a valid passport or ID card — a driving licence is not accepted as ID. We found no official fee or processing time for the Kathmandu office. Documents not in German or English need a translation; OeAD asks for a sworn translation into German and accepts English “in some cases” (OeAD).

Permit health insurance from Nepal

Travel insurance covers your visa; for a permit it counts only at Red-White-Red Card filing (well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return costs) or, for a first student permit with OeAD’s statement on ÖGK student insurance, until ÖGK cover starts (ask your residence authority). Check Care Austria’s price, its 1-year minimum term and whether your authority accepts it before your New Delhi appointment.
