Residence permit renewal Austria: appointment, deadline, documents and insurance (2026)
For a residence permit renewal in Austria, book your appointment so you file in person between three months before expiry and the expiry day itself (§ 24 NAG, 2026). In 2026 the fee is €218. A timely application keeps your stay lawful until the decision; a late one counts as a new first application. Bring proof of all-risk health insurance again.
The chips show Care Austria’s unlimited tariffs per person at 2026 prices, and the unlimited Standard tariffs rise from 2028 under the policy terms. The minimum term is 1 year, and ordinary cancellation is possible only after 1 year, then only to 31 December with 1 month’s notice (AVB § 3). Care Austria is one option, not a legal requirement. ÖGK cover through a job subject to compulsory health insurance also counts (a marginal job up to €551.10 a month in 2026 gives accident insurance only), and so does ÖGK self-insurance (MA 35 says a waiting period must be bridged with private insurance). Unlimited tariffs need no extra declaration for Vienna’s MA 35.
As of October 2026 (checked 30 October 2026), four facts sum up residence permit Austria renewal.
- The renewal fee for an Austrian residence permit is €218 (oesterreich.gv.at, 2026).
- A § 24 NAG confirmation for travel while the renewal is pending costs €50 (Gebührengesetz § 14 TP 8, 2026), so renewal plus confirmation is €268.
- The renewal must be filed at the earliest three months before expiry and at the latest on the expiry day (§ 24 NAG; City of Vienna). A permit expiring on 30 September can be renewed from 30 June to 30 September.
- ÖGK student self-insurance costs €78.84 a month in 2026 (ÖGK).
How close is your card to expiry?
Your renewal route depends on how far your card is from expiry. More than three months away is too early, within three months you are in the filing window, and after expiry the application counts as a first application (§ 24 NAG).
My card expires in more than 3 months
Too early to file. Use the time to book the appointment and gather documents.
Start with the renewal documents.
My card expires within 3 months
You are in the window. File in person before the last day of validity.
Next, see the appointment and steps.
My card has already expired
This counts as a new first application, unless an unforeseeable or unavoidable event stopped you without your fault (or with only minor negligence) and you file within two weeks after it ends.
The rules are under late renewal.
I want a different permit type
Combine the renewal with a change of purpose.
How that works is under change of purpose.

How do you book the MA 35 residence permit renewal appointment?
In Vienna you book the appointment online and then file in person. The City writes “Sie müssen den Antrag persönlich stellen”, which means you must apply in person (wien.gv.at). For student permits the City says you may book at any MA 35 office (Referat 4.1–4.6), regardless of your district, and that you should look for free slots early; without internet, call +43 1 4000-3535 (wien.gv.at). Book early so that your appointment falls between three months before expiry and the expiry day. Outside Vienna the district authority or the city (in Graz the Styrian provincial government) handles renewals, and “some authorities require or offer appointment booking” (oesterreich.gv.at). The office itself is explained on MA 35 Vienna.

What the City says on MA 35 Wien Aufenthaltstitel Verlängerung
The City of Vienna’s page on Aufenthaltstitel Verlängerung (renewal of a residence title) gives the window in plain words: file “at the earliest 3 months before” your current title expires and “at the latest on the day” it expires (wien.gv.at). For an MA35 residence permit extension the documents depend on the permit you hold, so check the permit’s own page; for students that is the list below. MA 35 reported an average of 52 days for all third-country cases in 2025, first applications and renewals together; we found no separate renewal figure.
Which residence permit renewal documents does Austria ask for?
Every renewal needs the general conditions of the original permit plus the permit’s own conditions; we found no single federal document set on oesterreich.gv.at (oesterreich.gv.at). The Austria residence permit renewal form is the application form for your title; Vienna accepts it in German or English for students. The table sets the general conditions next to Vienna’s official Student-renewal list.
| Document | General core documents — check your title (no official federal list) | Student permit in Vienna |
|---|---|---|
| Signed application form | Yes | Yes, German or English |
| Valid passport, current photo | Yes | Photo not older than 6 months |
| Health insurance, all risks, pays in Austria | Yes | Yes — ÖGK self-insurance or private |
| Secured living costs / income | Yes | Under 24: €722.58, from 24: €1,308.39 a month (2026) (base; + regular costs above €386.43) |
| Rent or dormitory contract | Depends on the title (researchers are exempt from the housing condition) | Yes (regular expenses) |
| Proof of the permit’s purpose | E.g. job, own means | 16 ECTS or 8 semester hours last year; Studienblatt |
| Creditor-protection self-disclosure | Not on the general page | Yes — the KSV1870 disclosure under Art. 15 GDPR, at no charge, is accepted (wien.gv.at) |
| Integration agreement | May be required | — |
| Fee | €218 | €218, paid on filing |
Foreign documents not in German or English need a certified German translation; an apostille or legalisation may also be required, depending on the document and issuing country (wien.gv.at). The printable standard list is on Austria visa documents, and all fees are on Austria visa fees.
What are the Austria student visa renewal requirements?
Strictly, students renew the residence permit, not the visa. The “Residence Permit – Student” is valid for at most 12 months and is renewed by up to 12 months each time (wien.gv.at). Students in EU or multilateral mobility programmes or university agreements can get 2 years (§ 64 (6) NAG). For an Austrian student residence permit renewal you show study success (at least 16 ECTS or 8 semester hours in the past academic year, or admission to a regular degree) plus funds, insurance, the KSV1870 self-disclosure and the €218 fee (2026). An MA35 residence permit renewal for students follows the same list; you receive an Einreichbestätigung as proof that you filed. Details on study success, work and the one-time job-search year are on Austria student residence permit.
What happens if you renew your residence permit late?
A late renewal is treated as a first application, and your continuous right of residence ends (§ 24 NAG). A first application must, as a rule, be filed abroad before you enter Austria (§ 21 (1) NAG), so ask the authority before your permit runs out. The law makes one narrow exception (an unforeseeable or unavoidable event, no fault or only minor negligence, and filing within two weeks after the obstacle ends). Keep proof of the event. The permanent residence rules are on permanent residence in Austria.
Can you travel while the renewal is pending?
Yes, you can travel while your residence permit renewal is pending, but only safely with a confirmation in your passport. After a timely application the authority can affix a § 24 confirmation, valid for up to three months, that allows visa-free entry into Austria (oesterreich.gv.at). The fee for a confirmation under § 24 NAG is €50 (GebG § 14 TP 8). Vienna tells students to apply for a Notvignette before travelling (wien.gv.at).
Can you change your permit type at renewal?
Yes, a renewal can be combined with a change of purpose until the authority decides (§ 24 (4) NAG). If the new purpose fails, the old permit is still renewed when its own conditions are met. Examples are a graduate switching to a Red-White-Red Card (Red-White-Red Card) or a family member moving to another title. After the renewal, 3 years apply for the residence-title categories listed in § 20 (1a) NAG when Module 1 is completed and the person has two years’ continuous lawful settlement (§ 20 (1a) NAG); Student permits stay at 12 months, or 2 years in mobility programmes (§ 64 (6) NAG).
Which health insurance do you show at renewal?
At a residence permit renewal you show health insurance that pays in Austria and covers all risks for the time you stay, just as at the first application. Travel insurance is not sufficient for these permits (BMI). The limited exceptions are a Red-White-Red Card application (travel health insurance well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return costs, at application, migration.gv.at) and a first student permit (OeAD statement that ÖGK student insurance follows after entry, plus travel insurance until ÖGK cover starts; ask your residence authority). The full rule is on health insurance for a residence permit. What changes at renewal is that you may now have statutory options, as the table shows.
| Your situation | Proof | Cost a month |
|---|---|---|
| Employed, job subject to compulsory insurance (marginal job at or below €551.10 a month in 2026: accident insurance only) | ÖGK insurance through the job | Deducted from salary |
| Student with a recognised university place | ÖGK student self-insurance (ÖGK) | €78.84 |
| Student, private | Care Austria Education (12–35) | €56 unlimited; €51 364-day tariff, extra MA 35 declaration |
| Not working, adult | ÖGK self-insurance | €565.25, 6-month waiting period unless waived (bridge it with private cover, MA 35) |
| Not working, private | Care Austria Standard | €155 / €222 / €510 by age band |
Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026). Care Concept AG is the seller of Care Austria and HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG) the insurer. The cover ends when you are granted Daueraufenthalt – EU or another unlimited residence permit (AVB § 6), so arrange other cover from the day that permit is granted. The marginal-earnings limit is from the ÖGK; ÖGK student details are on ÖGK student insurance.
How a master’s student renews in Vienna
Illustrative example: Tariq, 26, studies at TU Wien; his student permit expires on 30 September. He may file from 30 June at the earliest and books an MA 35 slot for mid-July. He collects his Studienblatt, a transcript with 24 ECTS from last year, his bank statement showing €1,308.39 a month (the 2026 base amount, as he is over 24; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG), his dormitory contract, the free KSV1870 self-disclosure and his insurance certificate, and pays €218.
His Care Austria Education policy (€56 a month in 2026, €672 a year, with a 1-year minimum term, AVB § 3) runs on unchanged. The unlimited tariff has no fixed end date; it ends if he leaves Austria for good or receives Daueraufenthalt – EU or another unlimited residence permit (AVB § 6). When he wants to visit his family in August, he asks MA 35 for the § 24 confirmation (€50) before flying, so he can re-enter even if the new card is not ready.
Need cover that runs through your renewal?
- Care Austria Education unlimited €56 (12–35) and Standard €155 (0–49), €222 (50–64) or €510 (65–74) a month in 2026, each with a minimum term of 1 year (AVB § 3)
- The contract ends when you leave Austria for good, or on Daueraufenthalt – EU or another unlimited permit; Vienna requires another insurance already for the Daueraufenthalt EU application
- Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026)
HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG) insures the plan, which Care Concept AG sells. Ask about pre-existing conditions before you apply, and read the full plan and limits first.

Frequently asked questions
How early can I apply to renew my Austrian residence permit?
At the earliest three months before your permit expires, and at the latest on its last day of validity (oesterreich.gv.at, City of Vienna). An application filed earlier than three months before expiry is too early. Book early so that your appointment falls inside this window.
What happens if I apply for renewal after my residence permit has expired?
It is treated as a new first application, not a renewal (§ 24 NAG), and your right of residence is interrupted. The only exception: an unforeseeable or unavoidable event stopped you from filing in time, you were not at fault or only slightly negligent, and you file within two weeks after the obstacle ends. Then it counts as a renewal and the gap counts as lawful stay.
Can I travel abroad while my residence permit renewal is pending?
Yes, you can travel abroad while your renewal is pending if you filed in time and get a confirmation affixed to your passport first. Under § 24 (1) NAG it is valid for up to three months and allows visa-free re-entry to Austria; oesterreich.gv.at calls it an “emergency visa”; Vienna’s student page asks for a Notvignette, which we understand to be this confirmation — check with MA 35. The fee for a § 24 confirmation is €50 (GebG). Ask for it before you book flights.
Do I need an appointment to renew my residence permit at MA 35?
Yes, in Vienna you file in person after booking an appointment online; for student permits you may book at any MA 35 office, whatever your district, and without internet you can call +43 1 4000-3535 (City of Vienna). Elsewhere the district authority or city decides; oesterreich.gv.at says some authorities require or offer appointment booking (oesterreich.gv.at).
What is the KSV1870 self-disclosure for a student permit renewal?
It is a current self-disclosure from a creditor-protection register (Selbstauskunft aus der Evidenz eines Gläubigerschutzverbandes), which Vienna asks students to bring to a renewal. The City names the free KSV1870 disclosure under Art. 15 GDPR as an accepted example (wien.gv.at). The City asks for a current disclosure, so do not reuse an old one; request it early enough to have it in hand at your appointment.
Do I need to show health insurance again when I renew my permit?
Yes, you show health insurance again: the authority checks the general conditions at each renewal, including cover that pays in Austria and “covers all risks” (wien.gv.at, § 11 NAG). If you now have a job subject to compulsory insurance, you are ÖGK-insured through it (a marginal job at or below the 2026 limit of €551.10 a month gives accident insurance only); students can use ÖGK student self-insurance (€78.84) or an accepted private policy.
Can I change my permit type when I renew it?
Yes, you can combine a renewal with a change of purpose (Zweckänderung) until the authority decides (§ 24 (4) NAG). If you do not meet the new purpose’s conditions, that part is refused separately and your current permit is still renewed if its own conditions are met. Vienna charges more for a combined application; the amount is not stated on its page.
