Austria visa from Bangladesh 2026: study, work, New Delhi embassy and health insurance

Quick answer

For an Austria visa from Bangladesh in 2026, the Austrian Embassy New Delhi is responsible, and there is no Austrian embassy in Dhaka. Schengen visas go to the French embassy in Dhaka, visa D applications to VFS, and residence permits are, as a rule, filed in person in New Delhi (bmeia.gv.at). A first permit costs €218; for a residence permit, travel cover counts only under two narrow exceptions (RWR-card application, first student permit; conditions below).

Students 12–35, unlimited: €56/month (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3)Under 50, unlimited: €155/month (1-year minimum term, AVB § 3)Students 12–35, 364-day tariff, extra MA 35 declaration: €51/month

Care Austria’s 2026 prices above are for residence permits. Care Austria is not the travel insurance for a visa C or D, because cover cannot start before entry into Austria. Ordinary cancellation of an unlimited tariff is possible only after 1 year, then only to 31 December with 1 month’s notice (AVB § 3), and the unlimited Standard tariff rises from 2028 per the policy terms. With the 364-day tariff, Vienna’s MA 35 needs an extra declaration.

Which Austria visa from Bangladesh do you need?

With no Austrian embassy in Dhaka, a visa D for up to six months is lodged with VFS, while a degree, a job or family life in Austria needs a residence permit, as a rule filed in person at the embassy in New Delhi. Bangladeshi citizens need a visa for the Schengen area and, unless an exception applies, an airport transit visa (Interior Ministry visa list, as of 16 October 2026). Find your plan in the four boxes below.

Does an Austria visa application from Bangladesh go to Dhaka, VFS or New Delhi?

Three different counters handle Bangladeshi applications: the French embassy in Dhaka for Schengen visas, VFS for the Austrian visa D, and the Austrian embassy in New Delhi, in person and as a rule, for residence permits (after lawful entry on a visa, student, researcher, Blue Card and Red-White-Red Card applicants may file in Austria instead, students only case by case per OeAD, § 21 (2) Z 6, 7 NAG; Z 6 gives no stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6); RWR applicants: ask the authority whether they may stay) (bmeia.gv.at: how to apply). This is the main difference from Indian applicants, who lodge visas and permits at counters inside India (Austria visa from India), and from Pakistan, where Austria has its own embassy in Islamabad (Austria visa from Pakistan). The embassy lists its visa application centres in “India, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal or Sri Lanka”. Bangladesh is not on that list, so confirm the VFS centre before you book (bmeia.gv.at, checked October 2026). Nepal, by contrast, has its own application centre (Austria visa from Nepal), and so does Sri Lanka (Austria student visa from Sri Lanka). The embassy also states that it can only process applications from people whose habitual residence is in its territory. Bangladesh falls within that territory, and a Bangladeshi who lives in another country applies at the embassy responsible for that country (see Austrian embassy visa application for which embassy covers which country).

The embassy “cannot give any information on current proceedings nor influence the processing time” (bmeia.gv.at).

How to get an Austria student visa from Bangladesh, and what Bangladeshi students need

For a full degree, the Austria student visa for Bangladeshi students is in law the “Residence Permit – Student”. The permit asks for university admission, funds for 12 months, accommodation, all-risk health insurance and the €218 fee (2026), and you file it, as a rule, in person in New Delhi (after lawful entry on a visa, case by case also in Austria, § 21 (2) Z 6 NAG, OeAD, without a right to stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG); the decision period is 90 days, plus 90 if documents must be added (OeAD). For universities and tuition, see study in Austria; the visa side, IELTS and processing times are on Austria student visa. Life on the permit once you are in Austria (renewal, work hours, study success) is covered on Austria student residence permit.

Austria student visa requirements for Bangladeshi applicants, in the order you need them:

This list is based on OeAD: Residence Permit – Student, Embassy New Delhi: how to apply and the legalisation page. The authority can ask for more documents in your case. The printable list is on Austria visa documents checklist.

Austria student visa process from Bangladesh in six steps.

  1. 1
Pick the document by length of stay

A stay of up to 90 days takes a Schengen visa C from the French embassy in Dhaka, and 91 days to 6 months a visa D, lodged with VFS for the Austrian Embassy New Delhi. Anything longer (degree, job, family) takes a residence permit, as a rule filed in person in New Delhi (Blue Card and Red-White-Red Card applicants, and students case by case per OeAD, may file in Austria after lawful entry on a visa, § 21 (2) Z 6, 7 NAG; students and Blue Card: no stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG; RWR: ask the authority whether you may stay).

  2. 2
Get the reason for the stay first

University admission (Zulassungsbescheid), a job offer for an employed Red-White-Red Card category or the Blue Card (self-employed and start-up routes differ), or the AMS points for the job seeker visa.

  3. 3
    Authenticate your Bangladeshi documents

Foreign ministry in Dhaka first, then the Austrian honorary consulate in Dhaka (appointment only), then translations.

  4. 4
E-mail the embassy in New Delhi

Request the residence-permit appointment by e-mail, using the address on the embassy’s how-to-apply page. Arrange any travel documents you need for India in time.

  5. 5
    File in person and wait

Give fingerprints, pay the permit fee in Indian rupees, and wait at home while the residence authority in Austria decides (student permit 90 days, plus 90 if documents are missing).

  6. 6
Collect the visa D and travel

After approval, apply for the visa D within 3 months, enter Austria, collect the permit card and register your address.

What does the first year on an Austria student visa from Bangladesh cost?

Leaving aside the funds you must hold, a Bangladeshi student who pays tuition and chooses Care Austria Education pays €2,343.44 in year one at 2026 prices: the €218 permit fee, €1,453.44 tuition for two semesters (unless a waiver applies) and €672 for the first 12 months of Care Austria Education (more if cover does not start on 1 January), plus up to €195 for the visa D. Consular fees are charged in INR at the current exchange rate, not in BDT. In 2026, the official part of the first-year bill for a Bangladeshi student aged 24 or older is the €218 permit fee, proof of €15,700.68 in funds (12 × €1,308.39; base, more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG), tuition and health insurance; under 24 the funds are €8,670.96. Public universities charge non-EU students €726.72 per semester; the law waives this for nationals of least developed countries on the OECD list, but we found no official confirmation of which countries the universities apply it to today, so ask your university (study in Austria).

Do you need an Austria student visa agency in Bangladesh?

We found no official rule that requires a Bangladeshi applicant to use an agency. If you file a first application yourself from Bangladesh, you appear in person in New Delhi (as a rule, § 21 NAG); for an employed RWR category the employer may file in Austria, and § 21 (2) NAG applicants may file in Austria after lawful entry (students and Blue Card: no stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG); the permit decision is made by the residence authority in Austria; the embassy states that “all applications will continue to be assessed by the Austrian Embassy only” even where VFS takes visa applications (bmeia.gv.at). We found no official list of agencies for Bangladesh. If you pay someone to help with forms, check every step against the embassy’s own pages and the documents checklist; nobody outside the authority can speed up a decision.

What is the Austria student visa ratio from Bangladesh?

We found no official Austria visa ratio from Bangladesh. We found no Austria student visa success rate for Bangladeshi students, no Austria student visa success rate from Bangladesh overall and no work visa ratio on bmeia.gv.at, the Interior Ministry’s pages or OeAD (searched October 2026). We do not repeat figures from agent websites, because we found no official source for them. The part you control is a complete file, meaning authenticated documents, the right counter (Dhaka, VFS or New Delhi), funds for the full 12 months and insurance of the right type. The general student-visa picture is on Austria student visa.

Which permit and which requirements apply to an Austria work visa from Bangladesh?

An Austria work permit visa or an Austria job visa from Bangladesh is, in law, a residence permit with labour market access, for example an employed Red-White-Red Card category or the EU Blue Card, which need a job offer from an Austrian employer (self-employed key workers and start-up founders follow their own RWR rules, without a job offer); for the employed categories the AMS checks the conditions, e.g. points, training and pay, before the residence authority decides, while self-employed key workers and start-up founders follow separate procedures (migration.gv.at). You file, as a rule, in person in New Delhi, or your employer files in Austria for an employed category; after lawful entry on a visa you may also file in Austria (§ 21 (2) Z 6, 7 NAG; for the Blue Card no stay beyond the visa, § 21 (6) NAG; RWR applicants: ask the authority whether they may stay). Without a job offer and outside the self-employed and start-up routes, only Very Highly Qualified Workers with at least 70 points can get the six-month job seeker visa, which does not allow work (migration.gv.at FAQ). Red-White-Red Card explains the card types and points; Austria work visa covers the routes and the labour market test, and Austria visa fees lists every fee.

Is a Bangladeshi travel policy enough for an Austrian residence permit?

No, a travel policy bought in Bangladesh is, as a rule, not enough for an Austrian residence permit. It fits a visa C or D, but a residence permit needs health insurance that “covers all risks” and pays in Austria (§ 11 NAG), and the Interior Ministry says travel health insurance “is in any case not sufficient” (bmi.gv.at, our translation). Replies in a Bangladeshi students’ Facebook group name BGIC, a VFS list of Bangladeshi insurers, Swisscare and Care Austria (the published terms of both are side by side on Care Austria vs Swisscare), but that discussion is not evidence that any policy meets the residence-permit rule. For a first student permit, OeAD says a written statement that ÖGK student insurance will be taken out after entry can be attached, and travel health insurance is then sufficient only until that cover can start (OeAD); ask your residence authority before you rely on it. We found no official verdict on any Bangladeshi insurer for the permit. The rule is explained on health insurance for a residence permit (prices by age are on Austria health insurance cost); student options on student health insurance in Austria.

It can be more relevant for an accompanying relative who lacks ÖGK cover.

Care Concept AG is on Vienna's MA 35 list: unlimited Care Austria tariffs need no extra declaration, 364-day ones do (checked 30 October 2026) (wien.gv.at). Whether an authority outside Vienna or the embassy in New Delhi accepts a given policy is not confirmed to us, so ask yours. You buy Care Austria from Care Concept AG; the insurer is HanseMerkur Versicherungsgruppe (Advigon Versicherung AG). You can buy it from Bangladesh before your appointment, but cover cannot start before you enter Austria, and you apply before the trip or within one year after entry (AVB). Ask about pre-existing conditions in writing before you apply.

As of October 2026 (checked 30 October 2026): the Austrian Embassy New Delhi is responsible for Bangladesh (bmeia.gv.at). A temporary residence permit costs €218 and a visa D €195 from age 6 (Embassy New Delhi, 2026). Student funds are €722.58 a month under 24 and €1,308.39 from 24, for 12 months (OeAD, 2026 base amounts; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG). Visas need travel insurance of at least €30,000; for permits, travel insurance is not sufficient (BMI; exceptions: Red-White-Red Card filing with travel cover well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return costs; a first student permit with OeAD’s statement on ÖGK student insurance, plus travel insurance until ÖGK cover starts; ask your residence authority). Care Austria Education costs €56 and Standard €155 a month under 50, unlimited, minimum term 1 year (Care Concept tariff page 2026, AVB § 3).

Austria spouse visa from Bangladesh: can your husband, wife or parents come?

A spouse can follow, but on their own permit. The spouse of a student can apply for a “Residence Permit – Family Community” and the spouse of a Red-White-Red Card or Blue Card holder for a Red-White-Red Card plus; either way the spouse must be at least 21, and for the Red-White-Red Card plus German A1 is needed before entry unless an exemption applies, e.g. for Blue Card families (OeAD, migration.gv.at; § 21a NAG). An Austria student visa with spouse from Bangladesh therefore means two files, two fees, the couple’s funds of €2,064.12 a month (2026; base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG) and two proofs of insurance. Parents cannot derive a family permit from your student or work permit and must qualify on their own, e.g. with a settlement permit on their own income (§ 44 NAG, quota-bound; €2,616.78 single / €4,128.24 couple (spouses or registered partners living together) a month in 2026, more if regular costs exceed €386.43), their own work or study permit, or a visit on a Schengen visa C. Read family reunification in Austria and can I bring my parents to Austria?; once a worker’s spouse lives in Austria, ÖGK co-insurance may be possible, at an extra 3.4 % of the insured person’s contribution base unless an exemption applies (§ 51d ASVG).

Care Austria Standard unlimited for a relative from Bangladesh: 2026 and from 1 January 2028 (Care Concept tariff page and AVB § 5; checked 30 October 2026)
Relative2026, per monthFrom 1 January 2028
Husband or wife under 50€155€187
Spouse or parent 50–64€222€268
Parent 65–74€510€617

For the age band, take the calendar year your cover starts and subtract your year of birth; after that your age is the current calendar year minus your year of birth, and the next band applies from 1 January of the year you turn 50 or 65 (unlimited Standard; AVB premium table). Minimum term 1 year (AVB § 3); the unlimited Standard tariff rises on 1 January 2028 per the policy terms. A student spouse aged 12–35 can use Care Austria Education instead.

What the process looks like for a master’s student from Dhaka

Illustrative example: Tanvir, 26, from Dhaka, has a master’s admission from a public university in Graz but no Austrian embassy in Bangladesh to file with. He has his degree certificate and transcripts authenticated by the foreign ministry and then at the Austrian honorary consulate in Dhaka. Because he is 24 or older, he must show €15,700.68 for 12 months (2026 base amount). He e-mails the embassy in New Delhi for an appointment, arranges any travel documents he needs for India, and files the Residence Permit – Student in person, paying €218 in rupees.

For the permit he wants all-risk insurance that pays in Austria from the start, not a travel policy. He compares Care Austria Education unlimited at €56 a month (2026 price) and asks his residence authority whether it accepts the policy for his file. For the first 12 months that would be €672 (more if cover does not start on 1 January, AVB § 3), and cover starts the day he enters Austria. After approval he applies for the visa D within three months, travels to Graz, collects his permit card and registers his address. After the first contract year he could compare with ÖGK student self-insurance at €78.84 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Which health insurance should Bangladeshi students buy for the Austrian student visa?

For the Residence Permit – Student, Bangladeshi students need health insurance that covers all risks and pays in Austria (§ 11 NAG); a travel policy of at least €30,000 with medical repatriation fits only a visa C or D (up to six months). The Interior Ministry says travel health insurance “is in any case not sufficient” (bmi.gv.at, our translation). Replies in a Bangladeshi students’ Facebook group name BGIC and a VFS list of Bangladeshi insurers; that is not evidence that any of them meets the permit rule, and we found no official verdict on any Bangladeshi insurer for the permit. For a first student permit OeAD names one option: a written statement that ÖGK student insurance will be taken out after entry, with travel insurance only until that cover starts (OeAD; ask your residence authority). Vienna’s MA 35 list names 11 insurers, none from Bangladesh (checked 30 October 2026). One option: Care Austria Education at €56 a month in 2026 (ages 12–35, minimum term 1 year, AVB § 3).

Is there an Austrian embassy in Bangladesh?

No, there is no Austrian embassy in Dhaka. The Austrian Embassy in New Delhi states: “The Austrian Embassy in India is responsible for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka” (bmeia.gv.at). In Dhaka there is an Austrian honorary consulate, which provides authentication services by appointment only (Embassy New Delhi: legalisation); it does not take visa or residence-permit applications. The embassy’s phone number is (+91/11) 2419 2700.

Where do Bangladeshi citizens apply for an Austrian Schengen visa?

Bangladeshi citizens apply for an Austrian Schengen visa at the French embassy in Dhaka. The Austrian Embassy New Delhi writes: “For Schengen visas in Bangladesh is the French embassy in Dhaka competent” (bmeia.gv.at: how to apply). A Schengen visa C is for visits, business trips or short courses of up to 90 days in any 180 days, and its fee is €90 for adults. For a national visa D (91 days to 6 months) the same page says: “D visas have to be lodged at our external service partner VFS.” The embassy lists its visa application centres in “India, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal or Sri Lanka” — Bangladesh is not on that list, so confirm the VFS centre before you book (bmeia.gv.at, checked October 2026).

Do Bangladeshi students have to travel to New Delhi for the Austrian residence permit?

Yes, as a rule, Bangladeshi students travel to New Delhi for the residence permit. Residence permits for stays over six months, the job seeker visa and work-programme visas are filed in person at the Austrian embassy in New Delhi, after an e-mail appointment request (bmeia.gv.at); after lawful entry on a visa, students may, case by case (OeAD), file in Austria instead, without a right to stay beyond the visa (§ 21 (2) Z 6, (6) NAG); a first permit application cannot go through an external service provider (bmeia.gv.at: settlement and residence). Plan any travel documents you need for India, the trip and the 2026 fee of €218, which the embassy collects in Indian rupees at the current rate. The decision is made by the residence authority in Austria, not by the embassy.

Can I move to Austria with my spouse as a Bangladeshi student?

Your spouse cannot come on your own permit but can apply for a separate “Residence Permit – Family Community”, and spouses must be at least 21 at the time of application (OeAD). In 2026 the funds to show are €2,064.12 a month for a couple, plus €201.88 per child, shown for 12 months (base; more if regular costs such as rent exceed €386.43, § 11 (5) NAG). Your spouse needs their own all-risk health insurance; once resident in Austria, a student’s spouse or registered partner may be co-insured on the student’s ÖGK self-insurance; the additional contribution was not confirmed in our sources, so ask ÖGK about eligibility, start date and cost. Care Austria Standard costs €155 a month under 50 (2026, minimum term 1 year). Details: Austria student residence permit and family reunification in Austria.

Where are Bangladeshi documents authenticated for Austria?

For Bangladesh, the Austrian Embassy New Delhi refers to its honorary consulate in Dhaka, where authentication services are offered by appointment only (Embassy New Delhi: legalisation). The embassy adds that consular legalisation “always requires prior authentication by the relevant Ministry of Foreign Affairs”, so the Bangladeshi foreign ministry comes first. We found no official fee or processing time for the Dhaka office. For Red-White-Red Card, Blue Card and job seeker files, the official document sheet asks for translations into German or English of documents in other languages (migration.gv.at); for the student permit, OeAD asks for translations into German by a sworn translator and accepts English “in some cases” (OeAD).

Travel insurance covers your visa; for a permit it counts only at Red-White-Red Card filing (well above €30,000 incl. rescue and return costs) or, for a first student permit with OeAD’s statement on ÖGK student insurance, until ÖGK cover starts (ask your residence authority). Check Care Austria’s price, its 1-year minimum term and whether your authority accepts it before your New Delhi appointment.
